Bach's preludes and fugues for organs have never suffered from neglect. While Bach's vocal works fell into eclipse soon after his death in 1750, his keyboard compositions continued to draw considerable approbation. The preludes and fugues, as part of this esteemed repertoire, remained in wide use throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Consequently they number among the best-known and most-frequently discussed works of the baroque era. They were already available in several printed editions by the time the first volume of the BG appeared in 1851. They were treated at some length in the ground-breaking nineteenth-century biographies of Forkel, Hilgenfeldt, Bitter, and Spitta. Since then they have been discussed in general terms in the numerous monographs dealing with the organ repertoire or Bach's organ compositions in particular. Hence it is surprising that no one has singled out the preludes and fugues for a full-scale study, taking into consideration the sources, the style, the chronology, and other equally important aspects of the pieces. The present volume focuses on half of this task, the detailed investigation of the preludes. Included in this study will be all those compositions--called prelude, toccata, fantasia, or otherwise--which fulfill an introductory purpose. Thirty-three works fall into this category: nine single pieces and twenty-four preludes from prelude-fugue pairs.

A monument in the history of Western music, The Well-Tempered Clavier represents not only the culmination of J. S. Bach's own maturation process but also the impetus for the emerging style and structure of modern keyboard music. Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin were influenced by its polyphonic richness and depth of harmony, and Schumann counseled young musicians to "make The Well-Tempered Clavier your daily bread." Modern pianists can follow Schumann's advice with this new edition of an authoritative and long-out-of-print score that offers illuminating perspectives from a pair of eminent musical interpreters. Book II of this two-volume set features Sir Donald Francis Tovey's analyses of 24 preludes and fugues, including suggestions for performance. In addition to commentaries by Tovey, a lauded Bach scholar and world-famous musicologist, the pieces are complemented by fingerings devised by Harold Samuel, a major Bach interpreter. Students, teachers, and professionals will appreciate this finely engraved and modestly priced version of Bach's enduring works.

This is a completely revised 2003 edition of volumes I and II of The Organ Music of J. S. Bach (1980), a bestselling title, which has subsequently become a classic text. This edition takes account of Bach scholarship of the 25 years prior to publication. Peter Williams's piece-by-piece commentary puts the musical sources of the organ works in context, describing the form and content of each work and relating them to other music, German and non-German. He summarises the questions about the history, authenticity, chronology, function and performance of each piece, and points out important details of style and musical quality. The study follows the order of the Bach catalogue (BWV), beginning with the sonatas, then the 'free works', followed by chorales and ending with the doubtful works, including the 'newly discovered chorales' of 1985.
