The Other Poetry of Barcelona: Spanish and Spanish-American Women Poets. Edited by Carlota Caulfield and Jaime D. Parra. Introduction by Jaime D. Parra. The present book, is dedicated to a group of Spanish and Spanish-American poets, all women, who for one reason or another have Barcelona as their point of reference. They write in Spanish or Catalan and are tightly linked, despite differences in their styles, tastes and even languages. The Other Poetry of Barcelona is a collection of these voices, which have grown and developed around Barcelona in recent years. The poets included in this anthology are: Neus Aguado, Nicole d'Amonville Alegria, Carmen Borja, Carlota Caulfield, Marga Clark, Mariana Colomer, Gemma Ferron, Concha Garcia, Rosa Lentini, Gemma Mana Delgado, M. Cinta Montagut, Ana Nuno, Teresa Pascual, Susanna Rafart, Teresa Shaw, Anabel Torres, and Esther Zarraluki. The book includes an appendix with original poems in Spanish and Catalan, and bio-bibliographies of the poets."

Versions or translations of one of Europe's most important and least known poets, Joan Maragall, an essential figure of Catalan literature. These poems begin in patriotic celebration of all things Catalonian, folklore, folk dance, song... then wrestle to embrace both Catholicism & 19th Century German philosophy. Along the way, anarchist terrorism, the Spanish American War, and the seeds of Socialism appear. But like all great poetry, Joan Maragall's work transcends its era to touch all readers who encounter it. This is the English world's first chance to encounter a large selection of Maragall's poems brought into English. It is unlikely to be the last.

The volume traces the founding critical theories of the autobiographical genre, from the Enlightenment period to the most recent developments, which, since the Sixties and the essays of Roy Pascal and Jean Starobinski, have had a greater and greater influence. It offers – in contrast to the essential, and by now classic, definition of Philippe Lejeune – an increased effectiveness of the poem to express the narrative purposes of autobiography, recognizing poetic writing that has the extraordinary ability to say what “the mortal language does not say,” to quote Leopardi. The works of Seamus Heaney, Thom Gunn, Carlos Barral and Jaime Gil de Biedma are analyzed here, and show an unveiling of the self through memories, places and objects that often characterize them and that allow, to whomever recalls one’s own experience through writing, the recovery and restoration of essential meanings to the reconstruction not only of subjective identity, but also of one’s own community.
