In the months leading up to the 1997 Singapore General Election, many observers were already billing it in terms of a "watershed" election that would chart the course of Singapore politics well into the 21st century. The ruling People's Action Party had seen its popular vote slide in the previous three successive elections and was determined to stem, if not decisively reverse, that slide. On the other hand, the opposition parties were determined to hand the ruling party a fourth successive reduction in its vote and, through that, establish a long-term trend in decline in support for the PAP. The outcome of the election, which was bitterly fought, will indeed have major implications for Singapore politics well into the new millennium. This book analyses the significant aspects of the election campaign, provides a host of interpretations for the election results, sets out alternative explanations to certain political phenomena given by other observers, and details some of the key implications the outcome of the elections will have for the Singapore body politic, in particular, and society at large, in general.

“A stark picture of war between the Germans and the Soviets, including some very interesting illustration . . . fascinating, if chilling, reading.”—Firetrench The Red Army’s casualties during the Second World War and the casualties sustained by the German army they fought are a key element in any assessment of the conflict on the Eastern Front. Since the war ended over seventy years ago, the statistics have been a source of bitter controversy, of claim and counterclaim, as each generation of historians has struggled to uncover the truth. This contentious issue is the subject of this absorbing book. The figures reveal much about the way the war was fought, and they demonstrate the enormous human price the Soviet Union paid for its victory. That is why the statistics have been so strongly contested. Distortion and falsification by official historians have obscured the facts because the issue has been so heavily politicized. Using recently declassified information from the Russian archives, the authors focus in forensic detail on the way the figures were recorded and compiled and seek to explain why, so many years after the war, the full truth about the subject is still far from our reach.

The Illusion of Victory demonstrates that most of the rewards of victory in modern warfare are either exaggerated or false. When the ostensible benefits of victory are examined a generation after a war, it becomes inescapably evident that the defeated belligerent rarely conforms to the demands and expectations of the victor. Consequently, long-term political and military stability is denied to both the victorious power and to the defeated one. As a result, neither victory nor defeat deter further outbreaks of war. This sobering reality is increasingly the case in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ian Bickerton persuasively argues that as the rhetoric of victory becomes more hollow all countries must adopt creative new approaches to resolving disputes.
