Unique and engrossing, this is a true story of suppressed passion and domestic intrigue at the heart of Victoria’s court. After an illustrious military career in the Crimean War, during which he won a Victoria Cross, Howard Elphinstone was appointed guardian to Queen Victoria’s favourite son, Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught, who was Governor General of Canada from 1911-16. Martyn Downer’s book includes a fascinating account of Arthur’s first trip to Canada in 1869, which took place despite the threat of his assassination by Fenian terrorists intent on revenging the Irish famine. During his eventful tour, Arthur took part in the defence of Canada following the Fenian raid at Saint John in May 1870. With relations between Britain and the United States at low ebb, Elphinstone also took the prince on a controversial tour of America which culminated in a frosty reception from President Ulysses Grant at the White House. Elphinstone remained in Court until 1890 when he was drowned in a tragic accident. During this period he became one of Queen Victoria’s closest confidants and a father figure to her nine children. His journals and remarkable correspondence with the Queen, much of which is published here for the first time, shed fascinating and intimate new light on the world of the Victorian Court. The Queen’s Knightis a captivating portrait of the close and affectionate relationship between Victoria and Elphinstone, and sheds new light on the frail human being at the heart of a vast empire.

Play Queen's Knight Openings against anything! 1.Nc3! for White is the Van Geet Queen's Knight Attack. 1...Nc6! for Black is the Nimzowitsch Queen's Knight Defence. You have a complete repertoire that works against any opening. This book has had a major revision in 2016. Many more master games have been added. The book now has 110 games with an Index of Names to Games. Follow Miles, Myers, Short, Mikenas, Van Geet, Nimzowitsch, Bogoljubow, Keres, Keilhack, Bauer and Wisnewski. The author has played these openings in thousands of games. The goal is to introduce you to the super stars of this opening. You see through their games how 1.Nc3 and 1...Nc6 have been handled. Many masters play this from both sides. The author's personal philosophy is to play the Queen's Knight on move 1 and either center pawn two squares on move 2. Sometimes this leads me to well-known openings. Often you can choose lesser known openings. Sometimes you may play the center pawn only one square.White you play the knight on the left in the 1.Nc3 Van Geet also called the Dunst Opening. As Black you play the knight on the right in the dark knight Nimzovich system. It works. A few games from the Sicilian Defence and Vienna Game have been added in case you wish to transpose. But you don't have to.Consider new strategy and tactics and your interest will soar! Some of the author's best rated tournament games were with the Queen's Knight. You are going to win games that you want to show your friends. Stay excited. Have fun playing chess!

Return to the Five Hundred Kingdoms, where a damsel can rescue herself, thank you… Princess Andromeda knows that any problem can be solved with a bit of research. So when a dragon storms the kingdom of Acadia, she decides it’s time to hit the books. Despite all her research, the only acceptable answer she can find is sacrificing a fair maiden—for Acadia is governed by “Tradition,” a rule that cannot so easily be sundered. Then she is picked as the sacrifice and must take matters into her own hands. With the help of her champion, Sir George, Andromeda sets out in search of the dragon’s lair, wanting nothing more than to change her fate. But to do so will take the strongest of wills, knowledge, quick wits and a refusal to give up, no matter what happens along the way… Previously Published.
