With the Russian invasion of Ukraine underway, Mondonomo has published a special dictionary edition devoted to the Ukrainian given names, their transliteration and etymology. The work can be considered as the very first Reference Dictionary of Ukrainian Names. Written by leading figures in the field including translatology and onomastics, this is the definitive scholarly reference for a new generation of Ukraine-centred researchers and amateurs. This dictionary is a celebration of Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage bringing to light the country’s most important names from prehistory to the present. It chronicles the naming patterns within Ukraine at a time when the country’s people, culture, and language are facing destruction and devastation. This move comes out of solidarity with the people of Ukraine. The dictionary, being the first attempt in the Ukrainian-English language pair, represents a milestone development in the combined interdisciplinary fields of comparative name research, translation studies, sociology, history and some other disciplines. The authors present a work, which is engaging and rich in its reach across the said domains. It has been built on the rich heritage of the preceding Ukrainian authors who have published the relevant dictionaries of Ukrainian names that used to be mostly unavailable to the general English-speaking public because of their insufficient visibility and the language barrier. Thus, one of the main aims of the Dictionary is to expand the current framework, to bring Ukrainian and English names into dialogue, to demonstrate the intersections between them, and to contribute to the understanding of how the fascinating national patterns merge in the process of the global world view development.

The Beginning Learner’s Ukrainian Dictionary is, as its name implies, designed for beginning learners of the Ukrainian language. Bonus: Access to audio tracks to download and stream from the publisher's website. The dictionary is meant to be more than a reference in which to look up unknown words. It is a study tool to expand your lexicon and build a solid base in both vocabulary and grammar. You are encouraged to read through entry after entry, study the structure of the example sentences, notice the inflections of nouns, adjectives, and verbs, and practice your listening skills and pronunciation while listening to the accompanying audio tracks. Three Indexes: English-Ukrainian Quick Lookup; Common Ukrainian Names; Grammar Terms The dictionary has been adapted from our book The Beginning Learner’s Russian Dictionary, which is based on the official Lexical Minimum for the standardized test that includes 780 items that learners are expected to know at the A1 level. To these, the names of countries, common Ukrainian personal names, and grammatical terms have been added, bringing the total number of headwords in the dictionary to over 1,000. This dictionary offers many advantages for beginning learners over other Ukrainian-English dictionaries. It offers a reader-friendly, uncluttered layout. Only senses appropriate to the A1 level appear in the entries. Grammatical information is presented clearly in tables along with invaluable usage notes. Example sentences contain only A1-level vocabulary found in the dictionary. (Beginning learners may find other dictionaries overwhelming, as entries contain multiple senses, many of which are uncommon and make it difficult to determine which sense is intended. Such dictionaries present limited grammatical information, often in abbreviated form, under the assumption that the reader is proficient in Ukrainian grammar. Likewise, example sentences may contain too many higher-level vocabulary words to be of use to beginning learners.)

Although present-day Ukraine has only been in existence for something over two decades, its recorded history reaches much further back for more than a thousand years to Kyivan Rus’. Over that time, it has usually been under control of invaders like the Turks and Tatars, or neighbors like Russia and Poland, and indeed it was part of the Soviet Union until it gained its independence in 1991. Today it is drawn between its huge neighbor to the east and the European Union, and is still struggling to choose its own path… although it remains uncertain of which way to turn. Nonetheless, as one of the largest European states, with considerable economic potential, it is not a place that can be readily overlooked. The problem is, or at least was, where to find information on this huge modern Ukraine, and since 2005 the answer has been the Historical Dictionary of Ukraine in its first edition, and now even more so with this second edition. It now boasts a dictionary section of about 725 entries, these covering the thousand years of history but particularly the recent past, and focusing on significant persons, places and events, political parties and institutions as well as more broadly international relations, the economy, society and culture. The chronology permits readers to follow this history and the introduction is there to make sense of it. It also features the most extensive and up-to-date bibliography of English-language writing on Ukraine.
