Thérèse of Liseux (1873-1897), also known as St Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, is popularly named the Little Flower. This work charts the development of Therese's career as a writer. It offers a different understanding of Therese as a theologian for whom love, rather than doctrines and creeds, was the paramount value.

Translated by Aletheia Kane, OCD Complete collection of Thérèse's independent prayers, translated from the critical edition, with 9 pages of photos. "For me," wrote Thérèse of Lisieux toward the end of her life, "prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally, it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus." Besides the countless spontaneous prayers found throughout her autobiography, letters, poetry, and plays, St. Thérèse left behind 21 additional independent prayers, from every period of her life, here collected for the first time. In this book we find prayers to the Infant Jesus and the Holy Face, prayers to Mary and the saints, prayers composed in joy and sorrow, prayers written for her novices and missionary brothers. All of them reflect the Saint's passionate love of God, which she wished to share with friends near and far. The highlight of this volume is the first critical text of Thérèse's famous "Offering to Merciful Love," fully annotated. Ample background materials explain the setting and significance of each prayer. Scholars will find here essential new information for the study of the Saint's doctrine; general readers will find this book an indispensible resource for learning to pray as Thérèse did. "It is prayer, it is sacrifice which give me all my strength; these are the invincible weapons Jesus has given me. They can touch souls much better than words."

Mornings with Saint Therese is a compilation of short excerpts (no more than 1-3 pages) taken from the Little Flower’s writings and also from those of her close family members and friends. This hardcover book is beautifully designed inside and out, making it a perfect gift for those you love, or as a daily tool for deepening your own spiritual life — all for just $12.95! The following passages have been carefully selected as examples of the countless pearls of wisdom to be found in this special book. On Mortification "I resolved to lead a life of greater devoutness and mortification than ever before. When I speak of mortification, I don’t mean the kind of penance practiced by the saints. There are great souls who practice every sort of mortification from childhood, but I am not like them." "All I did was to break my self-will, check a hasty reply, and do little kindnesses without making a fuss about them — and lots of similar things. So, I prepared myself to become a bride of Jesus." Give, with No Thought of Results! On working with the Carmelite novices: "I throw to the right and the left to my little birds the good seed that the good God puts in my little hand. And then, the seed does what it will!" "I don’t concern myself about it. Sometimes the results are as if I had thrown nothing; other times, something good results. But the good God says to me, 'Give, give always without concerning yourself with results.'" Keeping the Fire of Love Burning "When I am feeling nothing, when I am incapable of praying, of practicing virtue, then is the moment for seeking opportunities, ‘nothings’ which please Jesus more than mastery of the world when suffered with generosity." "For example, a smile, a friendly word, when I would want to say nothing, or put on a look of annoyance, etc." Infinite Love "Oh! How beautiful is our religion; instead of contracting hearts (as the world believes), it raises them up and renders them capable of loving, or loving with a love almost infinite, since this love must continue after this mortal life which is given to us only for meriting the homeland of heaven, where we shall find again the dear ones whom we have loved on earth! Wanting Only to Die of Love "How gentle and merciful God is…I no longer want anything except to love until I die of love. I am free and fear nothing. I am not even afraid — and it used to be my greatest fear — that my illness will drag out and make me a burden to the community." "I do not refuse the struggle: 'The Lord is a rock upon which I stand; He teaches my hands to fight and my fingers to war. He is my protector and I have hoped in Him.'"

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Pious tradition tells us that Our Lady herself gave the concept of the Rosary as we recite it now to St. Dominic in an apparition in 1214. For hundreds of years, the Rosary has been recommended by popes, saints, and Our Lady in further apparitions.Although it often feels difficult-impossible even-to say the Rosary well, especially in a family, it is ALWAYS worth the attempt. I take great solace in this quote from Fr. Mark Kirby: "The devil, of course, hates the Rosary, precisely because it changes hearts, detaches from sin, attaches to the all-pure Mother of God, and leads to conversion. One of the ploys he uses to deter people from praying it is to suggest that unless one can pray it well, i.e. perfectly, one shouldn't pray it at all. I would suggest, rather, that the Rosary, even prayed badly, is better than no Rosary at all." The current Manual of Indulgences encourages the recitation of the Rosary by offering a plenary indulgence, subject to the usual conditions, available to the faithful every day of the year. To gain it, the Rosary must be recited in a church, a family, a religious community, or a group of friends. The five decades must be recited without interruption, and meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary must be added to the vocal prayers. Otherwise, the indulgence becomes partial. In this month's booklet, you'll find instructions and all the necessary prayers for the Rosary, as well as prayers and Bible readings in honor of October saints including St. Thrse of Lisieux, the Guardian Angels, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Luke, and Pope St. John Paul II. For Halloween a.k.a All Hallows Eve, which kicks off next month's devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, you'll find prayers and poems, perfect for families and friends who want to revel in the macabre Truths of the long Catholic tradition of Halloween . . . that we will each die, and should live our lives accordingly.

There is no female religious figure so widely known and revered as the Virgin Mary. Mary has inspired in cultures around the world a deep devotion, a desire to emulate her virtue, and a strong belief in her power. Perhaps no population has been so deeply affected by this maternal figure as Filipino Catholics, whose apparitions of Mary have increased in response to recent events, drawing from a broad repertoire of the Catholic supernatural and pulling attention to new articulations of Christianity in the Global South. In Mother Figured, historical anthropologist Deirdre de la Cruz offers a detailed examination of several appearances and miracles of the Virgin Mary in the Philippines from materials and sites ranging from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. By analyzing the effects of the mass media on the perception and proliferation of apparition phenomena, de la Cruz charts the intriguing emergence of new voices in the Philippines that are broadcasting Marian discourse globally. Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork and hitherto unexplored archives in the Philippines, the United States, and Spain, Mother Figured documents the conditions of Marian devotion’s modern development and tracks how it has transformed Filipinos’ social and political role within the greater Catholic world.
