In 1963 Professor Huggins! wrote "more than one half of the male population over the age of 50 suffer from benign tumors known as prostatic hypertrophy. Often an enlarged prostate is the only difficulty to cloud an otherwise tranquil old age". This statement emphasizes two important features of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH); the frequency with which it occurs and its association with increasing age. The true incidence is difficult to determine as most data relate to selected groups of patients; moreover, the diagnostic criteria of prostatic hypertrophy are not clearly defined. Normality merges imperceptibly into abnormality, for even in men who are clinically normal, rates of urinary flow decrease with 2 increasing age . Despite these inaccuracies, incidence figures show the magnitude of the problem; Flocks (1963) 3 reported that 65% of American men over 60 years suffer from it and in a selected group of Danish men 43% had symptoms of the 4 disease ; similar figures are reported for the U ni ted Kingdom 5. At present most patients with BPH, who need treatment, undergo surgical prostatectomy which may be considered the usual treatment. The frequency of the disease alone, creates certain problems, for annually more than 30000 men are admitted to hospital in the United States with this as a primary diagnosis and with an ageing population the figures can be expected to increase.

The diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia is based on symptoms and basic investigations. Other causes of voiding disturbances (prostate cancer in particular) are excluded. Conditions requiring surgical management are recognized. Follow-up alone or drug therapy are good options in patients with mild to moderate symptoms and no complications of urinary tract stricture.

Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Modern Techniques is an up-to-date review of modern techniques used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. It provides a comprehensive review of both office and operating room based techniques. Both electrosurgical and laser based techniques are covered. These include high powered 532 nm laser photoselective laser vaporization of the prostate (PVP), holmium laser enucleation/ablation of the prostate (HoLEP/HoLAP), and Bipolar Electrovaporization of the Prostate (Bipolar EVP/Bipolar TURP). In addition, a comprehensive review of office based techniques and future therapies currently being developed is presented. Each of these techniques are presented in a balanced fashion with a focus on modern literature. Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Modern Techniques will be of great value to Urologists, Urology Residents, Iternists, and Family Practitioners.

In February 1980 the Royal College of Radiologists, London, held its Second Symposium on Clinical Oncology. The subject was Prostatic Cancer and this publication is based on the presen tations at this meeting by leading authorities in the United Kingdom. The principal objective of these Symposia is to promote multi disciplinary collaboration for the benefit of cancer patients. Awareness and understanding of advances in a broad range of subjects are essential to ensure the timely and effective appli cation of new techniques in the prevention and treatment of all forms of cancer. Communication of this kind may also stimulate the creation of new ideas that may prove to be of more fundamental relevance to cancer research. Prostatic cancer has been afforded too little attention in the past, and its importance in Clinical Oncology has not been adequately recognised. And yet over the last 10 years consid erable progress has been recorded in our understanding of this disease and in its assessment and management. These achieve ments are well documented in this collection of papers and the outstanding problems are also clearly indicated. It is acknowl edged that the early diagnosis of prostatic cancer presents a continuing challenge, associated with the uncertainties that concern the clinical significance of 'latent' cancer of the prostate. The accurate assessment of the incidence and preva lence of the disease is extremely difficult and together these problems complicate the evaluation of the management of early or localised prostatic cancer.

The past 15 years have witnessed a marked increase in attempts to identify safe and effective treatment alternatives to prostatectomy. This book is a review of the current therapeutic efforts in the management of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is presented by a group of highly regarded basic and clinical scientists with a major interest in prostatic diseases. The information provided in this book is aimed at a wide audience including private practice and academic urologists, research fellows and doctors in postgraduate training, and basic scientists interested in prostatic pathology.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an age-related, nonmalignant condition that may lead to bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. The standard treatment of BPH has been ordinary loop transurethral prostatectomy, but new therapies have been developed as a combined result of research, technological advances, and the cumulative experience of urological surgeons. Among the most promising therapeutic alternatives to ordinary loop resection are those that deliver topical or interstitial heat to prostatic tissue. Transurethral microwave thermotherapy, visual laser ablation with the Nd:YAG laser, high-intensity focused ultrasound, and transurethral electrovaporization are some of the techniques described in this book. These innovative procedures, employed by skilled urologists using state-of-the-art instruments, hold forth the promise of improved quality of life for BPH patients and represent significant advances in the field of urology.

In the 8 years since the publication of the first edition of Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, great strides have been made in our understanding of diseases and neoplastic processes. Many clinically important new histopathologic entities have been described or more fully defined in virtually every organ. Numerous clinically important diagnostic and prognostic markers have entered routine practice. Genetic testing for the early detection of cancers and the molecular classification of diseases has become increasingly important. This is an age of enlightenment in surgical pathology, and the authors of this new volume have captured this sense of excitement herein. This much praised and widely used reference manual on has been extensively revised and expanded to cover the entire field of anatomic pathology. The Third Edition features the incorporation of full-color images in the text with updates of new diagnostic and prognostic information. New classifications and numerous new entities and histologic variants are fully explored. Useful immunostaining biomarkers and emerging molecular targets and relevant molecular findings that have emerged from recent genomic studies are incorporated in each chapter. Written by internationally recognized authorities, the comprehensive, evidence-based practice information is presented in an outline format that is clear and easy to follow. Up-to-date and richly detailed, Essentials of Anatomic Pathology, Third Edition offers both the pathologist-in-training and the practicing pathologist a concise summary of all the critical information needed to recognize, understand and interpret anatomic pathology.
