Two points determine an orientation, and the real or imaginary straight line which binds them is the rudimentor, being the simplest of all figuration. These points determine a direction. Four lines in a quadrilateral, bound by the outward distances, form a lozenge, or trapezium, &c., and the distances which bind the opposite points, or outward distances, are diagonals. Five points are placed in a straight line, determining a real or imaginary figure, like a T-form trapezium, cross, or polygon, &c. A number of points distributed in a straight line determine a real or imaginary figure. If the form is real, we get, Fig. 35. successively all the varieties of polygonal figures. If the figure is imaginary, the different arrangements of points are specified by number and situation. It is what appears in a coat of arms. In the repetition of the figures it is necessary to consider number and situation. Upon situation depends the particular arrangement (Fig. 35), because numbers can be arranged diversely. Generally, the arrangements of points are designed and specified: 1st, by a series which indicate number and situation; 2nd, by the usual figures, determined as the cross and the chevron; 3rd, by the geometrical figures, such as the straight line, triangle, hexagon &c. 92.
