This book provides a comprehensive description of a dosimetric technique called thermoluminescence dosimetry. There are hundreds of scientific papers on thermoluminescence and its applications, but none deal with the "handling" of the technique, except for some official documents regarding procedural tests which are now not easily found. For this reason the authors have written this book with the aim of describing in detail how to use this dosimetric method. This volume is a valuable guide not only on the proper handling of the TL dozemeters but also on the results obtained by their use. The book consists of nine chapters. The first three chapters cover the theory of thermoluminescence and the experimental methods used to evaluate the kinetics parameters. The next three chapters describe the practical aspects of setting up a thermoluminescent dosimetric system, specifically suggesting the procedures to be used in handling the TL dosimeters as well as all the related instrumentation. The algorithm correlating the TL emission to the radiation dosage is provided and explained. The precision and accuracy of the TL measurements are also discussed. The last three chapters are devoted to: (i) the practical procedure used in some specific application fields, (ii) a discussion about the lower limit of detection and (iii) the TL instrumentation. Several practical illustrative examples are given throughout the text. The book is intended for students and researchers learning new techniques and those working in the area of radiation dosimetry with a specific interest in the TL technique.

This second edition of the Handbook of Thermoluminescence enlarges on all the subjects which were treated in the first edition and adds further arguments, including the theory of thermoluminescent dose measurement, several examples concerning the kinetics parameters determination using various methods such as peak shape, isothermal decay, and so on. A special section is devoted to food irradiation, an important subject at the present time, and to the thermoluminescent characterization of the minerals extracted from the irradiated food. Another new section is devoted to the thermoluminescent phosphors and their main characteristics. The analytical treatments of the various thermoluminescent models are fully developed. As in the first edition, the arguments are given in alphabetical order to ease research. This second edition therefore aims to provide real practical support for researchers, students and personnel involved in radiation protection services, as well as in medical applications. Sample Chapter(s). Accuracy (definition) (343 KB). Contents: Area Measurement Method; Basic Equation of Radiation Dosimetry by Thermoluminescence; Calibration Procedure for a Batch of Thermoluminescent Dosimeters; Defects; Environmental Dose Rate; Fading Factor; Garlick-Gibson Model; Heating Rate Effects; Isothermal Decay Method; Keating Method; Luminescence Dosimetric Techniques; Metastable State; Numerical Curve Fitting Method; Optical Fading; Peak Shape Method; Peak Shift; Quasiequilibrium Condition; Recombination Processes; Solid State Dosimeters; Thermoluminescence; Various Heating Rates Method; Zirconium Oxide; Appendix. Readership: Researchers in applied physics, theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, new materials and glasses, insulators and optical materials.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection and the Euratom Council directive have specified that workers exposed to ionizing radiation shall be subjected to individual dose monitoring. In the past, individual doses have almost always been monitored by film badge dosimeters, but thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) are now coming into widespread use, principally due to the availability of automated readout systems. Techniques and Management of Personnel Thermoluminescence Dosimetry Services gives details of the operation of and experience gained with a number of large-scale TL personnel dosimetry services, with particular attention being paid to the management aspects of such services. For technical and administrative personnel in TLD services, TLD system designers, staff of licensing authorities concerned with dosimetric licensing, students of radiation protection, especially in the area of protection from ionizing radiation. A basic knowledge of atomic and nuclear physics is assumed, and a training in radiation protection or health physics would be an advantage.
