Timba and Vati are named after lions: and they need all the courage they can find when they are abandoned in a ditch. When Timba is eventually found by a young boy, Leroy, he is alone and starving. The author paints the rural geographical and sociological environment in which he was raised and highlights the careful parental care and the early death of his mother at the age of 32 years. He was then 12 years old and his siblings 8, 5, and 3 years old. This provides the base from which traditional and western education were pursued with determination and vision as the source of progress and power, thanks to the encouragement of his father. Armed with a liberal and professional education, Ejedepang-Koge, a teacher through and through, his autobiography reads like a book on the education and constitutional changes in Cameroon. He served and successively as a teacher, Head of Service, Deputy Director in both the Departments of Private and Secondary Education, Director of Education of Private Education in the Ministry of National Education and, in Diplomatic Service as Cultural Counsellor in the Embassy of Cameroon in Washington DC. By virtue of such services, he mirrors beautifully the joys and pains of a conscientious and patriotic civil servant striving to do his duty honestly and refusing to be discouraged and thwarted.

Cuban music is recognized unanimously as a major historical force behind Latin American popular music, and as an important player in the development of US popular music and jazz. However, the music produced on the island after the Revolution in 1959 has been largely overlooked and overshadowed by the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon. The Revolution created the conditions for the birth of a type of highly sophisticated popular music, which has grown relatively free from market pressures. These conditions premised the new importance attained by Afro-Cuban dance music during the 1990s, when the island entered a period of deep economic and social crisis that has shaken Revolutionary institutions from their foundations. Vincenzo Perna investigates the role of black popular music in post-Revolutionary Cuba, and in the 1990s in particular. The emergence of timba is analysed as a distinctively new style of Afro-Cuban dance music. The controversial role of Afro-Cuban working class culture is highlighted, showing how this has resisted co-optation into a unified, pacified vision of national culture, and built musical bridges with the transnational black diaspora. Musically, timba represents an innovative fusion of previous popular and folkloric Afro-Cuban styles with elements of hip-hop and other African-American styles like jazz, funk and salsa. Timba articulates a black urban youth subculture with distinctive visual and choreographic codes. With its abrasive commentaries on issues such as race, consumer culture, tourism, prostitution and its connections to the underworld, timba demonstrates at the 'street level' many of the contradictions of contemporary Cuban society. "Dem Seh" is a book of stories from my village, Buxton. I come from a village of great tradition and history, and one of its many traditions is its storytelling. We are a predominantly black village; direct descendants of slaves, and so storytelling has always been with us. We have always had a line of great storytellers, or as we say "shit talk artists." The book is a small collection of some of the more popular and hilarious stories. Some are contemporary and others are from the previous generation. This book grew out of a sense of the need for renewal in my village. Buxton suffered through some violent and stressful times a few years ago, and I felt that Buxton needed to laugh again; to laugh at itself again. To celebrate itself again. This book is a gift to Buxton, for Buxton has always given of itself. Part of its proceeds will be donated to social and educational initiatives in the village. I was born in Buxton, Guyana, on the east coast of Demerara, where I received my primary and secondary education. I left for Cuba in 1980, where I completed studies in Medicine in 1985. I returned to Guyana, and after serving out my contract, came to the United States in 1992. I am currently practicing in Primary Care and Addiction Medicine in Brooklyn New York, where I live with my wife and daughter.
