Jon Laansma Ph.D., University of Aberdeen, is Associate Professor of Ancient Languages and New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is the author of several articles and of “I Will Give You Rest”: The “Rest” Motif in the New Testament with Special Reference to Matthew 11 and Hebrews 3-4. He contributed the introductions and notes for 1–2 Timothy and Titus for the NLT Study Bible. J. Ramsey Michaels Th.D., University, is Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. He has published commentaries on the Gospel of John, 1 Peter, and the book of Revelation. He has been a member of the translation teams for the New International Version and the New Living Translation and has been a consultant for the American Bible Society.

Unlike most of the letters of Paul, 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus are written not to church communities but to individuals caught up in the midst of challenging situations. Hebrews, on the other hand, is a quite distinctive letter, with its compelling presentation of how, in the coming of Jesus, God has given us something better than all that had gone before in the Old Testament period. All four letters are written, however, to help churches to develop the distinctive lifestyle of Jesus' followers in an often hostile world. Theological questions are interwoven with pastoral concerns as the writer seeks to guide the growing congregations to maturity.

Acquainted with some of the masters who have traversed the same ground, I have extensively availed myself of their labors, using, as is to be noticed, in many cases their very language. Mindful of the Lutheran impress which this Commentary is to bear, I freely acknowledge that to this end my indebtedness to Lutherans, pre-eminently Huther and Delitzsch, is no greater than my obligations to the Anglicans Ellicott and Westcott and to the Reformed Van Oostersee and Ebrard.
