The 29th Infantry was on the front lines on D-Day, Battle of Normandy, and was the first division to cross the Elbe into Germany. When, on January 17, 1946, the 29th Infantry Division was deactivated, 28,776 soldiers had been killed, wounded, taken prisoner or missing. In September 1944, Joseph H. Ewing joined the famed 29th Infantry Division of the Maryland-Virginia National Guard as the unit was readying to storm the port city of Brest, France. In Germany, he led his rifle platoon in making an assault crossing of the Roer River at Julich, which led to the division’s drive on Munchen-Gladbach. During quiet periods on the Roer, Col. Ewing typed and edited a newspaper he titled Chin Strap. The scant-copy newspaper was circulated within the company and also caught the eye of battalion headquarters. The publication earned Col. Ewing the nicknames “Strap” and “The Strap.” At the end of World War II, Col. Ewing was assigned to Fort Meade and the War Department Historical Division in the Pentagon, and decided to author the official history of the 29th Division in World War II. This fascinating account of the division’s wartime history is the result of Col. Ewing’s combat experience and civilian career in journalism.

A young woman’s murder leads a British detective deep into the shadows of a wealthy family’s secret past—where a killer lies in wait. It would be the height of British understatement to say that retired surgeon Charles Bromley and his step-daughter Antonia Halliday do not have the rosiest of relationships. After all, Antonia did accuse him of intentionally botching her father’s surgery so that he could marry her rich, widowed mother. Now Antonia has been found murdered on the grounds of Bromley Manor, and Charles isn’t exactly stricken with grief. He’s plenty upset, however, by the disruptions caused by DCI Neil Paget and his team as they investigate the crime. While Bromley complains to Paget’s superiors, Paget forges on with the investigation, doggedly uncovering a nest of nasty family secrets. Though he is warned to tread lightly, nothing will stop him from getting to the bottom of this perplexing case before the killer decides to tie up loose ends.

A vivid and disquieting narrative of Jesuit slaveholding and its historical relationship with Jesuit universities in the United States The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, is renowned for the quality of the order's impact on higher education. Less well known, however, is the relationship between Jesuit higher education and slavery. For more than two hundred years, Jesuit colleges and seminaries in the United States supported themselves on the labor of the enslaved. "Let Us Go Free" tells the complex stories of the free and enslaved people associated with these Catholic institutions. Walker Gollar shows that, in spite of their Catholic faith, Jesuits were in most respects very typical slaveholders. At times, they may have been concerned with the spiritual and physical well-being of the enslaved, but mostly they were concerned with the finances of their plantations and farms. Gollar traces the legacies of the Jesuits' participation in the slaveholding economy, portrays the experiences of those enslaved by the Jesuits, and shares the Jesuits' attempts to come to terms with their history. Deeply based on original research in Jesuit archives, "Let Us Go Free" provides a vivid and disquieting narrative of Jesuit slaveholding for the general reader interested in the historical relationship between slavery and universities in the United States.

Longlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence A TIME Best Book of 2023 “Qian has a gift for sensory details, and for the speculative and grotesque. . . . a pleasure to read.”—Raven Leilani, author of Luster The electric, unsettling, and often surreal stories in LET'S GO LET'S GO LET'S GO explore the alienated, technology-mediated lives of restless Asian and Asian American women today. A woman escapes into dating simulations to forget her best friend’s abandonment; a teenager begins to see menacing omens on others’ bodies after her double eyelid surgery; reunited schoolmates are drawn into the Japanese mountains to participate in an uncanny social experiment; a supernatural karaoke machine becomes a K-pop star’s channel for redemption. In every story, characters refuse dutiful, docile stereotypes. They are ready to explode, to question conventions. Their compulsions tangle with unrequited longing and queer desire in their search for something ineffable across cities, countries, and virtual worlds. With precision and provocation, Cleo Qian’s immersive debut jolts us into the reality of lives fragmented by screens, relentless consumer culture, and the flattening pressures of modern society—and asks how we might hold on to tenderness against the impulses within us.
