This volume will contain contributions from researchers who have been associated with Professor Leite's long career in science and science management. After an extremely successful career as a research physicist at Bell Labs, Professor Leite returned to Brazil, where he was instrumental in founding the Institute of Physics of the State University of Campinas. His record in research and scientific leadership, together with his concern with social issues related to Science and Technology, has made him one of the most respected voices of the Brazilian scientific community. The contributions in this volume are centered around Optical Properties of Condensed Matter. However, given the broad spectrum of Professor Leite's activities, it is natural that some authors have contributed papers on other fields.

This is the sixth volume of a well-established and popular series in which expert practitioners discuss topical aspects of light scattering in solids. This volume discusses recent results of Raman spectroscopy of high Tc superconductors, organic polymers, rare earth compounds, semimagnetic superconductors, and silver halides, as well as developments in the rapidly growing field of time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. Emphasis is placed on obtaining information about elementary excitations, the basic properties of materials, and the use of Raman spectroscopy as an analytical tool. This volume may be regarded as an encyclopedia of condensed matter physics from the viewpoint of the Raman spectroscopist. It will be useful to advanced students and to all researchers who apply Raman spectroscopy in their work.

This review volume is based primarily on the balance equation approach developed since 1984. It provides a simple and analytical description about hot electron transport, particularly, in semiconductors with higher carrier density where the carrier-carrier collision is much stronger than the single particle scattering. The steady state and time-dependent hot electron transport, thermal noise, hot phonon effect, the memory effect, and other related subjects of charge carriers under strong electric fields are reviewed. The application of Zubarev's nonequilibrium statistical operator to hot electron transport and its equivalence to the balance equation method are also presented. For semiconductors with very low carrier density, the problem can be regarded as a single carrier transport which will be treated non-perturbatively by the nonequilibrium Green's function technique and the path integral theory. The last part of this book consists of a chapter on the dynamic conductivity and the shot noise suppression of a double-carrier resonant tunneling system. Contents:Balance-Equation Approach to Hot-Carrier Transport in Semiconductors (X L Lei & N J M Horing): Recent Developments in Magnetotransport Theory (N J M Horing et al.)Effect of Nonequilibrium Phonon on the Electron Relaxation and Transport (M Lax & W Cai)Nonlinear Transport of Electrons under a Strong High Frequency Electric Field in Semiconductors (W Cai & M Lax)Nonequilibrium Statistical Operator in Hot-Electron Transport Theory (D Y Xing & M Liu)Path Integral Study of Polaron Transport under High Electric Field (Z B Su): Impurity Resistivity under Thermalized Condition (C S Ting & L Y Chen)Nonequilibrium Green's Function Approach to Dynamic Properties of Resonant-Tunneling through Double Barrier Structures (L Y Chen & C S Ting) Readership: Physicists and electrical engineers. keywords:

This volume presents five review articles covering a broad range of topics which will be of interest to many scientists concerned with optics and related subjects. The first article deals with nonlinear optical properties of chalcogenide glasses. These materials have many interesting structural properties, some of which are useful for applications to integrated active optical devices. This article presents a review of experimental measurements of nonlinear absorption coefficients and nonlinear refractive indices of such materials. A review of various models formulated to explain their properties is also included. The next article reviews the research on super-resolution, i.e. the possibility of overcoming the classical diffraction limit of about half a wavelength. The problem is shown to be essentially equivalent to extrapolating the spatial frequency spectrum of the object beyond the spectral band of the optical system.
