For Animal Breeding and Genetics courses. An experienced educator in animal breeding, Rick Bourdon designed this book to be a modern, technologically up-to-date approach to animal breeding that is less intimidating to students than competing texts. The book is meant to be a learning text or guide as opposed to simply a reference. Understanding Animal Breeding addresses the abstract concepts of animal breeding, presenting the necessary mathematics, but previous experience in genetics and statistics is not assumed. Well organized and readable, the book stresses application, then explains theory for an overall understanding of the material.

The branch of biology that deals with the study of genes, heredity and genetic variation in living organisms is known as genetics. Animal breeding is the field of animal science that is concerned with the study of the estimated breeding value of livestock using methods like best linear unbiased prediction. It incorporates other disciplines such as quantitative statistics, molecular genetics and population genetics. This field can be majorly divided into two types of breeding practices. These are crossbreeding and purebred breeding. Crossbreeding is the mating of two different organisms to create an offspring that has traits of both the parents. Purebred breeding refers to the mating of similar organisms to maintain the stable traits of that particular organism. This book explores all the important aspects of animal genetics and breeding in the present day scenario. It is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex theories and principles related to this field. As this discipline is emerging at a rapid pace, the contents of this book will help the readers understand the modern concepts and applications of the subject.

The Routledge Course on Media, Legal and Technical Translation: English-Arabic-English is an indispensable and engaging coursebook for university students wishing to develop their English-Arabic-English translation skills in these three text types. Taking a practical approach, the book introduces Arab translation students to common translation strategies in addition to the linguistic, syntactic, and stylistic features of media, legal, and technical texts. This book features texts carefully selected for their technical relevance. The key features include: • comprehensive four chapters covering media, legal, and technical texts, which are of immense importance to Arab translation students; • detailed and clear explanations of the lexical, syntactic, and stylistic features of English and Arabic media, legal, and technical texts; • up-to-date and practical translation examples in both directions offering students actual experiences of professional translators; • authentic texts extracted from various sources to promote students’ familiarity with language features and use; • extensive range of exercises following each section of the book to enable students to test and practice the knowledge and skills they developed from reading previous sections; • glossaries following most exercises containing the translation of difficult words; and • a list of recommended readings following each chapter. The easy, practical, and comprehensive approach adopted in the book makes it a must-have coursebook for intermediate and advanced students studying translation between English and Arabic. University instructors and professional translators working on translation between English and Arabic will find this book particularly useful.

The past decade has revealed unfavourable trends in e.g. fertility, udder health and locomotion in some major dairy cattle breeds due to a large increase in production and insufficient consideration of functional traits in the breeding goals. Such unfavourable trends in some functional traits increase costs. Additionally, the enlargement of herds leads to less available labour time per individual cow. This asks for cows that are easy to handle. At the same time, society is demanding a higher welfare standard of animals. These contradicting developments have increased the desire for so called more robust animals. Robustness can be defined as 'the ability to maintain homeostasis in commonly accepted and sustainable herds of the near future'; or 'the ability of the cow to function well in the environment she lives in as well as in a wide range of climates and production systems'. This book contains a series of articles (26) dealing with the concept of robustness, including aspects like evolution, genetics, environment, animal health and welfare, and integrity. Besides the major functional traits also the links to energy balance, hot climatic conditions, and the attitude and input of stakeholders towards robustness as part of the breeding program are discussed. This book is the first attempt to summarise the available knowledge concerning this topic in cattle, making this book unique. The contributions are from authors of 16 countries from all over the world. However, the focus is presently on farm animal level, while in future robustness of the whole production system may also require additional attention.
