Universal Access In Ambient Intelligence Environments

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th ERCIM Workshop on User Interfaces for All, focusing on Universal Access in Ambient Intelligence Environments, held in Königswinter, Germany in September 2006. It covers interaction platforms and techniques for ambient intelligence, user and context awareness, inclusive design and evaluation, as well as access to information, education and entertainment.

This is the second of a three-volume set that constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, UAHCI 2007, held in Beijing, China. Devoted to ambient interaction, it covers intelligent ambients, access to the physical environment, mobility and transportation, virtual and augmented environments, as well as interaction techniques and devices.

The 13th International Conference on Human–Computer Interaction, HCI Inter- tional 2009, was held in San Diego, California, USA, July 19–24, 2009, jointly with the Symposium on Human Interface (Japan) 2009, the 8th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, the 5th International Conference on Universal Access in Human–Computer Interaction, the Third International Conf- ence on Virtual and Mixed Reality, the Third International Conference on Internati- alization, Design and Global Development, the Third International Conference on Online Communities and Social Computing, the 5th International Conference on Augmented Cognition, the Second International Conference on Digital Human Mod- ing, and the First International Conference on Human Centered Design. A total of 4,348 individuals from academia, research institutes, industry and gove- mental agencies from 73 countries submitted contributions, and 1,397 papers that were judged to be of high scientific quality were included in the program. These papers - dress the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of the design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas.

In recent years, the field of Universal Access has made significant progress in consolidating theoretical approaches, scientific methods and technologies, as well as in exploring new application domains. Increasingly, professionals in this rapidly maturing area require a comprehensive and multidisciplinary resource that addresses current principles, methods, and tools. The four-volume set LNCS 6765-6768 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, UAHCI 2011, held as Part of HCI International 2011, in Orlando, FL, USA, in July 2011, jointly with 10 other conferences addressing the latest research and development efforts and highlighting the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The 47 revised papers included in the third volume were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: universal access in the mobile context; ambient assisted living and smart environments; driving and interaction; interactive technologies in the physical and built environment.

Ambient intelligence began as a vision for the future of technology and has now become a reality. The widespread use of modern technology has quickly expanded into the use of our everyday lives. On a daily basis, we are instantly connected to people, places, ideas, and information which have led to the acceleration of knowledge. As the continuing development of new technologies becomes available, those technologies will play an integral role in the future. Pervasive and Ubiquitous Technology Innovations for Ambient Intelligence Environments is a collection of research on the subject matter of human computer interaction, ubiquitous computing, embedded systems, and other areas of study which contribute to ambient intelligence. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the third International Joint Conference an Ambient Intelligence, AmI 2012, held in Pisa, Italy, in November 2012. The 18 revised full papers and 5 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 (full papers) respectively 14 (short papers) submissions. From a scientific point of view, the papers make a multidisciplinary approach covering fields like computer science, human computer interaction, electrical engineering, industrial design, behavioral sciences, aimed at enriching physical environments with a network of distributed devices, such as sensors, actuators, and computational resources, in order to support users in their everyday activities. From a technological perspective the volume represents the convergence of recent achievements in ubiquitous and communication technologies, pervasive computing, intelligent user interfaces and artificial intelligence.

This book examines how the computer, as we currently know it, will be replaced by a new generation of technologies, moving computing off the desktop and ultimately integrating it with real world objects and everyday environments. It provides a unique combination of concepts, methods and prototypes of ubiquitous and pervasive computing reflecting the current interest in smart environments and ambient intelligence.
