THE LAND WARRIOR'S COMPREHENSIVE COMPANION The indispensable field manual for the Infantry Soldier, Special Forces operator, military contractor, or prepper. MAMMOTH 820+ pages! Updated and expanded - current edition. Full-size edition - LARGE 7" x 10" FORMAT: clear, detailed text & illustrations. Created and trusted by US military forces: United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE). Complete & Unabridged. IMPORTANT: this is not the older, outdated field manual (FM 3-21.8) with only 600 pages that is often offered for sale - or the even older FM 7-8 - this is the current, up-to-date ATP 3-21.8. Don't be fooled! "Batteries last hours, books last decades: get the print edition!" Infantry Soldiers have been the backbone of every army throughout history. Being the most fundamental and enduring of military occupations, the foot-soldier's art has been honed by centuries of warfighting around the world. These skills, therefore, should be studied not only by the Infantryman but by anyone who wishes to be well-prepared for potential combat, whatever their profession or specialty. With an incredible 820+ pages of tightly-written and profusely-illustrated material, this unique book provides the reader with a complete understanding of the strategy, tactics, techniques and tools of modern land warfare from the perspective of the small unit leader. "The primary mission of the Infantry platoon and squad is to close with the enemy by means of fire and maneuver to destroy, capture, or repel an assault by fire, close combat, and counterattack. In order to succeed, Infantry platoons and squads are aggressive, physically fit, disciplined, and well-trained. The inherent strategic mobility of Infantry units dictates a need to be prepared for rapid deployment in response to situations in different operational environments" - From the first chapter. There were no marching bands welcoming home returning troops from Vietnam, no ticker-tape parades for its heroes and no celebrations in Time Square. Instead, returning Vets were confronted with a range of reactions, not the least of which were indifference, silent disapproval, criticism, hostility and even contempt, in some quarters, for their lack of cleverness in not avoiding service in a war zone. Most returning Vietnam warriors were bewildered by the reactions of their fellow countrymen; but, then how could they possibly comprehend the psychological phenomenon which was only beginning to take hold and would later be named the "Vietnam Syndrome", a phenomenon which, at its extremes, was manifested in a revulsion to all things military? Even those who were proud of the returning servicemen and women were hardly effusive in their praise and greeted them with only muted enthusiasm. Most of these young veterans of an undeclared war had been shaped and molded in their formative years by the patriotic fervor which seized America during World War II and continued for perhaps a decade and a half after V. J. day. But, American society had profoundly changed in the 1960s with a shift in emphasis away from national goals to more individual ones such as civil rights, sexual liberation, pacifism, academic freedom, consciousness raising and a reaction against the excesses of the "military industrial complex", ironically named by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The cataclysmic cultural revolution of the 1960s collided violently with the more nationalistic goals of containing the spread of international communism and curbing the expansionist policies of the Soviet Union and Red China. Those who actually fought the Vietnam War became collateral victims of a wrenching cultural war, not of their own making; for the core values of these young men and women had, for the most part, not changed. Just as the World War II generation was imbued with traditional values of patriotism, loyalty to one's comrades, anti-totalitarianism and democratic freedom, most heroes of the Vietnam War were similarly grounded. The major difference is that while the former were celebrated, the latter were largely forgotten. Last Full Measure of Devotion calls upon us to revisit this remarkable generation of military heroes and, at long last, accord them the recognition withheld from them for almost four decades. The 22 individual profiles of Vietnam heroes contained between these covers are meant to be representative of the vast majority of Americans who served with honor in that lonely and beleaguered country on the South China Sea, more than thirty-five years ago.

A warrior's handbook that provides a conceptual overview of all relevant topics of small unit tactics every Special Forces soldier ought to be familiar with to be effective on the battlefield. It seeks to define the course of study for the sound development of Special Forces soldiers so as to avoid the Scylla of mere academia and the Charybdis of pure pragmatism, and to preserve the heritage, lineage, and legacy of the United States of America's most often misunderstood and unsung heroes, the fighting men of Special Forces. The handbook is categorized into five functional areas: HISTORY, DOCTRINE, PLANNING, OPERATIONS, and COMMON SKILLS. The handbook contains history of the regiment because it accentuates the why of planning and operations. If a fool learns by experience alone, then the wise man certainly can profit from the experience of fools. This expression attributed to Otto Von Bismarck, highlights an especially important truth in the study of war, namely, learning from history, especially the failures of others. Professional warriors have always placed a high premium on it, for it yields the laurels of victory. The desired end state for this systematic arrangement of knowledge is to serve as an institutional rudder for the Special Forces Community by laying a solid foundation during the initial Phases of the Special Forces Qualification Course. We're also hopeful this 10th anniversary edition of the warrior's handbook will prove indispensable for ODAs as a quick GO-TO reference when deployed overseas training and teaching warriors abroad.
