Video Pedagogy

This book conceptualises the ways in which video has created a pedagogy for current learning and teaching practices, disciplines, and environments. It brings together the concepts and practice of video as pedagogy by providing theoretical discussion and practical guidance and recommendations on the use of video in learning and teaching, drawing on a wide range of case studies including nursing education, business education, architectural education, engineering, mathematics, physical education, science education, and screen production. Part I focuses on ‘video, students and learning’ and Part II on ‘video, teachers and practice’. The book covers various perspectives on the concept and use of video in learning and teaching: developing students’ practical skills and knowledge; using video for teaching culturally sensitive topics and cultural competency; for feedback, reflection, training and professional development; making and producing videos for educational purposes, with discussion on techniques, devices, software and strategies.

Combining video analysis with the well-known Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model, this book offers teacher educators a fresh perspective and a new tool for supporting teachers’ learning and reflection. The clearly articulated and useful framework shifts the focus away from children and toward teachers’ thinking about their own teaching practice. Interwoven with practical examples of the framework in use, this book identifies ways that teachers and teacher educators can foster more productive kinds of reflection about video-recorded classroom interactions and support preservice and inservice teachers. To stop the downward spiral of intensifying environmental violence that inevitably leads to social violence we, as humans, need to better understand what is at stake and to determine how to make changes at the root levels. Ecopedagogy is centered on understanding the struggles of and connections between human acts of environmental and social violence. Greg W. Misiaszek argues that ecopedagogies grounded in critical, Freirean pedagogies construct learning that leads to human actions geared towards increased social and environmental justice and planetary sustainability. Throughout the book he discusses the need for teaching, reading, and researching through problematizing the causes of socio-environmental violence, including oppressive processes of globalization and constructs of “development”, “economics”, and “citizenship”, to name a few, that emerge from socio-historical oppressions (e.g., colonialization, racism, patriarchy, neoliberalism, xenophobia, epistemicide) and dominance over the rest of nature. Misiaszek concludes with ecopedagogies' challenges within the current post-truth era and possibilities of reimagining UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A volume on second-language acquisition theory and pedagogy is, at the same time, a mark of progress and a bit of an anomaly. The progress is shown by the fact that the two disciplines have established themselves as areas of study not only distinct from each other, but also different from linguistic theory. This was not always the case, at least not in the United States. The anomaly results from the fact that this book deals with the relationship between L2 theory and pedagogy despite the conclusion that there is currently no widely-accepted theory of SLA. Aspects of pedagogy are frequently researched, but the concept itself is poorly understood. More than just teaching and learning, pedagogy is about values, identities, relationships and interactions bounded by context. As such, researchers of pedagogy face the challenge of working out what constitutes pedagogical texts, data or evidence, and how these can be generated and understood. Research Methods for Pedagogy begins by exploring the different conceptualisations of pedagogy and their implications for how it is researched.
