Written by a pioneering leader in the development of vitreoretinal surgical techniques and instruments, Vitreous Microsurgery is a comprehensive how-to guide to all vitreoretinal procedures. This thoroughly updated Fifth Edition describes many new techniques and refinements of established procedures. More than 170 three-dimensional full-color illustrations—many by the Charles Retina Institute's resident medical artist, Byron Wood—enable surgeons to clearly visualize the techniques. This edition has new chapters on the Constellation vitrectomy system, uveitis, retinal complications of permanent keratoprosthesis, and anti-VEGF therapy and completely rewritten chapters on anesthesia and on retinopathy of prematurity. All illustrations have been updated, the majority to a 25-gauge approach instead of 20-gauge, and many new illustrations have been added. Many techniques and parameters unique to 25-gauge sutureless vitrectomy are discussed in detail. A companion website offers the fully searchable text and an image bank.

Describes techniques and technologies for performing vitreoretinal surgery. Emphasizing the decision making process involved in evaluating the best treatment for a patient, the authors walk through surgical procedures for correcting eye problems such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy, macular holes, endophthalmitis, and pediatric traction retinal detachments. The third edition has been completely rewritten and adds color illustrations. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

The vitreous humour is a clear gel positioned behind the iris (coloured part) and the lens, and in front of the retina (back of the eye). Vitrectomy is the surgical removal of the vitreous humour, a procedure needed to allow ophthalmic surgeons to diagnose and treat underlying disease in the eye. Small gauge minimally invasive vitreous surgery (MIVS) allows ophthalmic surgeons to make smaller incisions, reducing the need for sutures and therefore increasing the speed of recovery. This practical book presents ophthalmic surgeons with the most recent advances in MIVS, with emphasis on the differences between gauge sizes. Beginning with an introduction to the technique and anaesthesia, the following chapters discuss MIVS for different disorders. More than 190 full colour images and illustrations, and a DVD demonstrating MIVS procedures help retinal surgeons learn how to minimalise surgical trauma by reducing the gauge size of vitrectomy instruments. Key points Presents ophthalmic surgeons with most recent advances in minimally invasive vitreous surgery Emphasis on differences between gauge sizes Includes DVD demonstrating surgical procedures Comprehensive text enhanced by more than 190 colour images and illustrations

Vitrectomy techniques and instrumentation have been used successfully to treat a number of conditions in the anterior segment. These include: 1) vitreous in the anterior chamber, 2) inadequate pupillary openings, 3) lens surgery, 4) epithelial downgrowth, 5) hyphemas, and 6) certain glaucomas. These methods offer several advantages to the anterior segment surgeon. The advantages are primarily those of a well-controlled tissue excision system, maintenance of the normal shape of the globe, and ability to control intraocular pressure. Over the last two decades, tremendous progress has been made in vitrectomy surgery, most importantly the significant reduction of the gauge and implementation of microincision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS). At the same time, the introduction of wide-viewing systems and the utilization of vital dyes to better recognize structures like the vitreous and membranes have taken place. This volume starts with the fundamentals of MIVS, introducing both the mechanics and the physics of the latest generation of vitrectomy devices, followed by a description of the discrete gauge systems (i.e. 23-, 25-, and 27-gauge). Individualized but mandatory settings, techniques, and technology are also discussed in detail. There are also more than ten chapters outlining concrete surgical strategies that give surgeons a thorough overview of the procedures.

From the foreword: "Microsurgery of Retinal Detachment is an important contribution to the practice of vitreoretinal surgery. In this comprehensive volume, Dr. Bonnet shares her extensive experience in the management of conditions ranging from retinal tears and primary retinal detachment to giant retinal breaks and vitreoretinal surgery. The field of microsurgery has continued to evolve over the last twenty years, both for the anterior segment surgeon and, since 1970, for the vitreoretinal surgeon. Although there have been extensive descriptions of vitrectomy techniques, little has been written about microsurgical techniques for scleral buckling operations. This subject is well covered in the present edition, which consequently will be a valuable resource to the majority of retinal surgeons who do not as a rule employ microsurgery in the repair of retinal detachments."
