Library-quality hardcover book with dust-jacket. This book is a collection of short stories in Naskapi that features the "historical account" traditional Algonquian storytelling genre, tipâchimûna (stories). The book features some eyewitness accounts of tragic and exciting events on the land and water, ice and snow, as well as first-person accounts of the storyteller's own adventures and skill as a hunter and provider. This is the seventh book in a series prepared for reading in Naskapi and in English by the Naskapi Development Corporation. John Peastitute (1896-1981) was a Naskapi Elder who was a well respected as a story-keeper and storyteller. His repertoire of both tipâchimûna and âtiyûhkinich was extensive, and his performances engaging. The tape recordings of his stories that have survived to be preserved, processed and studied are a precious legacy. The "Otter Hunting" collection is third book in this sub-series of true historical accounts of Naskapi life told by a Naskapi speaker.

A timeless collection of stories told with a focus on children’s perspectives. Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows is an enduring classic of children’s literature, and has been beloved by readers of all ages since its publication in 1908. In addition to the delightful tale about the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Toad—illustrated in full color by Arthur Rackham—this volume includes more than two dozen short stories from Grahame’s collections The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898), the latter of which contains Grahame’s most famous short story, “The Reluctant Dragon.” With an emphasis on childhood perspectives and often devoid of adult sentimentalities, Grahame’s stories focus on the concerns of youth—a focus that makes these stories endure in the hearts and minds of today's readers.

A science journalist's journey along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska to track the status, health, habits, personality, and viability of sea otters--the appealing species unique to this coastline that was hunted to near extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries. These adorable, furry marine mammals--often seen floating on their backs holding hands--reveal the health of the coastal ecosystem along the Pacific Ocean. Once hunted for their prized fur during the 1700s and 1800s, these animals nearly went extinct. Only now, nearly a century after hunting ceased, are populations showing stable growth in some places. Sea otters are a keystone species in coastal areas, feeding on sea urchins, clams, crab, and other crustaceans. When they are present, kelp beds are thick and healthy, providing homes for an array of sealife. When otters disappear, sea urchins take over, and the kelp disappears along with all of the creatures that live in the beds. Now, thanks to their protected status, sea otters are making a comeback in California, Washington, and Alaska.

Excerpt from Otters and Otter-Hunting Since less is known of the habits of the Otter than of most other mammals in the fauna of these islands: and since in Otter-hunting the Field, well instructed, may take a more prominent and useful part than in any other form of the chase: I hope that this little volume may prove of equal interest to the naturalist and to the enthusiastic follower of the queen of summer sports - Otter-hunting'. Ian Watson is one of the most prolific short story writers in contemporary science fiction, with a range and invention that others might envy. In this collection we move from a ghostly occurrence in Catalonia to a memorably hallucinatory and atmospheric tale of eggs and ectoplasm in pre-glasnost Russia. The Times said of Watson that his 'stories are springloaded with effect, compressed with a drama that, in others, might take a novel to eke out', a judgement confirmed by he dozen stories collected here.
