Although raised on a farm in southwest Arkansas during the Great Depression, Doy Duncan, like many young boys of that time, dreamed of flying. Through hard work and perseverance, Duncan went to college, where he took primary Civilian Pilot Training. He then joined the U.S. Navy and completed secondary CPT in Conway, Arkansas, while waiting to be called to active duty. In November of 1942 he reported to the Naval Preflight School at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After months of training, Doy Duncan was assigned to the USS Kadashan Bay, CVE-76, to fly the FM-2 Wildcat fighter plane. He saw his first combat in September 1944 as he flew support for the First Marine Division's invasion of the Palau Islands in the Pacific. He would be shot down a month later in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Abandoned at Leyte is Duncan's story of courage and survival as a World War II Wildcat pilot.

This work is a detailed study of how Americans in the 1920s and 1930s interpreted and remembered the First World War. Steven Trout asserts that from the beginning American memory of the war was fractured and unsettled, more a matter of competing sets of collective memories—each set with its own spokespeople— than a unified body of myth. The members of the American Legion remembered the war as a time of assimilation and national harmony. However, African Americans and radicalized whites recalled a very different war. And so did many of the nation’s writers, filmmakers, and painters. Trout studies a wide range of cultural products for their implications concerning the legacy of the war: John Dos Passos’s novels Three Soldiers and 1919, Willa Cather’s One of Ours, William March’s Company K, and Laurence Stallings’s Plumes; paintings by Harvey Dunn, Horace Pippin, and John Steuart Curry; portrayals of the war in The American Legion Weekly and The American Legion Monthly; war memorials and public monuments like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; and commemorative products such as the twelve-inch tall Spirit of the American Doughboy statue. Trout argues that American memory of World War I was not only confused and contradictory during the ‘20s and ‘30s, but confused and contradictory in ways that accommodated affirmative interpretations of modern warfare and military service. Somewhat in the face of conventional wisdom, Trout shows that World War I did not destroy the glamour of war for all, or even most, Americans and enhanced it for many.

Mongrel Signatures reviews the Australian writer Mudrooroo's career and deals with central issues of identity, authenticity and truth. After 1996, academics and writers in Australia and around the world endorsed or denied Mudrooroo's Aboriginality after research had dramatically called his Indigenous identity into question. There has also been a long silence among fans of Mudrooroo, who has not commented publicly on his racial belonging. These challenging and lively “reflections” by European and Australian scholars and writers are not meant to discuss whether Mudrooroo can legitimately sign his works with an Aboriginal name (an essentialist and problematic view of identity and authenticity). Instead, they explore how Mudrooroo's writing restages the drama of subjectivity in terms of ‘articulation’ rather than ‘authentication’, and ask how we are to read him now in the face of current accusations and the cultural scenario of Aboriginal arts and studies. The contributors - in disagreement or in dialogue - treat questions of identity and representation, reading Mudrooroo's work through the lenses of such perspectives as psychoanalysis, postmodernism, postcolonialism, deconstruction and queer theory. The essays are designed to provoke debate and to dissolve the rigid polarities hitherto characterizing discussion of this highly influential creative artist.
