Goa easily gets subsumed in the cliche of beach-sun-and-fun. The dominant image of this state is one that is on a permanent holidy, and comprises of Westernised, middle-class inhabitants.While this face of Goa does indeed exist, its dominance in the media sidetracks a whole lot of other issues. Social activist Kalaland Mani and journalist Frederick Noronha look at the issues emerging from the farm and field. For this task, they zoom in on the work of the Madkai (Ponda)-based Peaceful Society in the 25 years that this organisation has been in a close connect with the issues from the heartland.

Violence against women is a global problem that includes domestic violence, sexual abuse of girls and women, trafficking of women, violence in humanitarian crisis settings, violence against female patients including abuse of doctor-patient relationships, and harassment and discrimination of women at the workplace. The mental sequelae of abused women includes posttraumatic stress syndromes, anxiety and depressive disorders, suicidality, substance abuse, and dissociative and somatoform disorders. However, to date, psychiatry and psychotherapy have widely neglected violence as an influencing factor on mental health. This book, which is the first comprehensive overview, discusses current evidence of the links between violence against women and mental health. It is authored by internationally renowned experts, and is both enlightening and thought-provoking. It reviews violence against women in different parts of the world and discusses its prevalence, nature and underlying causes. It looks at the implications of these findings for mental health policies and programs, and further, it strives to stimulate discussion and debate that will hopefully lead to pro-action not only in the medical but also in the political field. This book is essential reading for therapists and clinicians from varying fields, including psychiatry, psychosomatics, general medicine, and gynecology. It shall also serve as an important reference book for sociologists and policy makers.

In economics and development, women's empowerment has become increasingly important. Building stronger economies, achieving globally agreed-upon goals for growth and sustainability, and raising the standard of living for women, men, families, and communities all depend on empowering women to engage fully in economic activity across all sectors. The socioeconomic advancement of society and the mainstreaming of women are both influenced by the empowerment of women. It improves the status of women in terms of their social, economic, and political empowerment, which results in having an equal voice in politics and the decision-making process as well as actively participating at all stages of development. It assists women in developing their capacities, resulting in increased involvement, effective decision-making authority, and control, which ultimately leads to revolutionary action. Various initiatives have been introduced by the central and state governments to advance the position of women. The purpose of this study is to explore the significance of women's empowerment and the numerous government initiatives launched by the Indian government to advance women.
