This comprehensive collection of folk hero tales builds on the success of the first edition by providing readers with expanded contextual information on story characters from the Americas to Zanzibar. Despite the tremendous differences between cultures and ethnicities across the world, all of them have folk heroes and heroines—real and imagined—that have been represented in tales, legends, songs, and verse. These stories persist through time and space, over generations, even through migrations to new countries and languages. This encyclopedia is a one-stop source for broad coverage of the world's folk hero tales. Geared toward high school and early college readers, the book opens with an overview of folk heroes and heroines that provides invaluable context and then presents a chronology. The book is divided into two main sections: the first provides entries on the major types and themes; the second addresses specific folk tale characters organized by continent with folk hero entries organized alphabetically. Each entry provides cross references as well as a list of further readings. Continent sections include a bibliography for additional research. The book concludes with an alphabetical list of heroes and an index of hero types.

In AD 1296 Zhou Daguan, a member of a Chinese diplomatic mission from the Mongolian emperor Timur Khan to Cambodia, spent almost one year in the capital city known today as Angkor. He recorded in detail the country's landscape, flora, fauna, and its people's social life. This is the only surviving written record that enables us to have a glimpse into the life in Cambodia at the end of the 13th century. This English publication is a direct translation from one of the original ancient Chinese editions of Zhou's record by a Cambodian and a Chinese who have a deep knowledge of the culture and the geography of both Cambodia and China. The book helps to clarify many unidentified places, dignitary titles, plant and animal names, etc., that have remained unresolved for so long. Reading this book, is like travelling through time from Wenzhou (China) across the South China Sea, up the Mekong River into Cambodia, through Tonle Sap River and Tonle Sap Lake into the great walled city of Angkor Thom, where life in the ancient city comes alive in vivid detail. With the help of this book, interested visitors to Angkor will be able to enjoy identifying different ancient structures relating to the various aspects of social life described by Zhou and to the many carvings on bas-reliefs of different monuments that can still be seen today.

Moni Mekhala and Ream Eyso retells the sacred drama of the same name, a tale in which rivaling students of a powerful hermit bring life to lightning, thunder, and rain. Weaving together interviews, essays, photographs, and illustrations, the book uses the story to explore the evolution of the Khmer classical dance tradition, the passage of leadership within artistic tradition nearly destroyed by genocide, and the circumstances of today's women. Additional contributors include award-winning choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, cultural anthropologist Toni Shapiro-Phim, and visual artist Brian Mendez. "[An] enlightening and engaging exploration of one of the most important works in the Cambodian dance drama repertory... A love letter to the character of Moni Mekhala and all of the women who have safeguarded this exquisite art form for generations, this book is a testament to the power of myth in our everyday lives." Cecily Cook Senior Program Officer, Asian Cultural Council - New York "This book is profoundly artist-centered and thus offers an utterly unique and intimate account of Khmer classical dance. This is the first book to acknowledge how gender and sexuality can be interrogated through Khmer dance, whether in the distant Cambodian past, in a post-genocide present, or in Long Beach, California." Dr. Deborah Wong Professor of Music, University of California - Riverside President of Board of Directors, Alliance for California Traditional Arts "Lovingly conceived... Moni Mekhala and Ream Eyso captures the essence of a woman's strength and resilience in the midst of raging violence. It is a book I would want to get as a gift to all the girls and women in the various circles of my life." Chivy Sok Cambodian American human rights advocate and co-founder of Devata Giving Circle
