John Howard Reid (a well-known author with over 50 years experience in writing and publishing) is Chief Judge of three annual literary events: The Tom Howard Short Story, Essay and Prose Contest, the Tom Howard Poetry Contest, and the Margaret Reid Prize for Traditional Verse. These long-established, prestigious writing competitions each offer cash prizes totally $5,350. In "Write Ways to WIN WRITING CONTESTS", John Reid tells every aspiring author how to achieve success. To research this book, he entered no less than eighty writing contests himself. His entries won prizes, or were short-listed, at least 27 times. That's better than a one-in-three success rate. "I would easily have achieved a one-in-two success rate if I had only entered the RIGHT contests," Reid declares. "I entered some of them merely to prove my theories or simply to obtain Judges' Reports." In this book, John Howard Reid will tell YOU how to select the RIGHT contests for YOUR essays, short stories and poems.

The SouthWest Writers 2022 Writing Contest motto was A Diversity of Expression. Thirteen categories of prose, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction as well as art and photography grace this delightful anthology of winning entries. The motto of SouthWest Writers is "Writers Helping Writers." We do this through classes, conferences, workshops and a membership of more than 430 people―many of whom are published, well-known authors. Twice monthly meetings offer insights and opportunities for networking. The Annual Writing Contest offers an important step in an author's development. It focuses on short pieces of poetry, non-fiction essays and genre-driven short prose. The contest allows both budding authors and seasoned writers to sharpen their skills. Many new authors need a challenge in a supportive environment where they can feel comfortable discussing their work. A true success story begins with being courageous enough to put your skills in front of others. Our words are our children, so we need to understand that constructive criticism does not condemn, it helps us mold and grow out talents. Seasoned published writers can fall into a rut. Contests such as this one channel their minds and talents in different directions, freshening their skills and pushing their boundaries. Our contests are open to anyone, not just members of SWW. This year in addition to prose, poetry and non-fiction, SWW included two art categories. Most of the categories were reviewed by our professional team but three categories were adjudicated by the membership at large. These stories and poems are fun, or sad, or factual, or surprising, many of them are all these things. Pay attention to the names of the authors-you will probably see them again!

“A poet celebrates the wonders of nature in a collection of essays that could almost serve as a coming-of-age memoir.” —Kirkus Reviews As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted—no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape—she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance. “What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts. Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy.
