Excerpt from Account of the Great Comet of 1858 When, however, the physical organization of comets becomes the special object of inquiry, and the attention is directed to almost any of their characteristics distinguishable from the simple motion of their centres of gravity about the Sun, we find an extensive field of research which has scarcely yet been entered upon. Of the laws which govern the mysterious evolutions of comets, we know little beyond the uncertain information suggested by conjecture and analogy; we are still at a loss to account for some of the simplest featu'res of their aspect, and have not even arrived at a clear and definite statement of the facts of their phenomena which should be subjected to theoretical discussion.
