Excerpt from Astronomy for Schools and General Readers Aida - A celestial globe, twelve inches, or there abouts, in diameter, is most useful in. Illustrating and explaining many astronomical phenomena, and in finding the constellations and principal stars. Be sure that the globe has a horizontal ring about the middle. A Planisphere is a tolerable substitute for a globe, and much cheaper. A Star Lantern is also very convenient. A good star-map is important. A tele scope of any size, or even a good spy-glass or pair of opera-glasses, will add much interest to the study. Excerpt from General Astronomy In this work the Author has endeavoured to cover as wide a field as possible and it has necessarily been somewhat difficult to decide upon what to include and What to omit, especially when dealing with the most recent developments. It is hoped, however, that the book will serve to give the reader a sufficiently complete view of the present state of Astronomy. Mathematics has been almost entirely excluded in order that the volume may appeal to the amateur, no less than the student. Where possible mathematical methods of reasoning have been followed, which it is hoped will prove of value to students of elementary mathematical astronomy in clothing the symbols with more descriptive matter than is given in the text-books on Mathematical Astronomy. Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy: Designed as a Reader and Text-Book for Schools and Families This work is designed to fill a vacuum in schools and families. With the advancement of science there should be a corresponding advancement in the facilities for acquiring a knowledge of it. To economize time and expense in this department is of as much import ance to the student as frugality and industry are to the success of the manufacturer or the merchant. Im pressed with the importance of these facts, and having a desire to aid in the general diffusion of useful know ledge by giving them some practical form, this work has been prepared. It has a double purpose. As a reader, it contains a great variety of topics; and, being almost entirely divested of scientific terms and phrases, its language is level to the comprehension of the youthful mind. As a text-book, it treats first of the sun and those heavenly bodies with which we are all, by obser vation, most familiar, and advances, consecutively, in the investigation of other worlds and systems which the telescope has revealed to our view. Thus to enhance the interest and value of this work to the student and casual reader, nearly all of the topics that it contains are fully illustrated by engravings, prepared expressly for that purpose. And to promote this object still further, and impart knowledge in the most impressive manner by a sensible demonstration of the arrangement. Excerpt from Practical Talks by an Astronomer The present volume has not been designed as a systematic treatise on astronomy. There are many excellent books of that kind, suitable for serious students as well as the general reader; but they are necessarily somewhat dry and un attractive, because they must aim at complete ness. Completeness means detail, and detail means dryness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Text-Book of General Astronomy: For Colleges and Scientific Schools The present work is designed as a text-book of Astronomy suited to the general course in our colleges and Schools of science, and is meant to supply that amount of information upon the subject which may fairly be expected of every liberally educated person. W'hile it assumes the previous discipline and mental maturity usually corresponding to the latter years Of'lthe college course, it does not demand the peculiar mathematical training and aptitude necessary as the basis of a special course in the science - only the most ele mentary knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry is required for its reading. Its aim is to give a clear, accu rate, and justly proportioned presentation of astronomical facts, principles, and methods in such a form that they can be easily apprehended by the average college student with a reasonable amount of effort. The limitations Of time are such in our college course that probably it will not be possible in most cases for a class to take thoroughly everything in the book. The fine print is to be regarded rather as collateral reading, important to any thing like a complete view of the subject, but not essential to the course. Some of the chapters can even be omitted in cases where it is found necessary to abridge the course as much as possible; e.g., the chapters on Instruments and on Perturbations. Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy Finally, the aim has been to give the student a well balanced conception of the astronomy of the present day. It is desired that it shall become an appreciable part of his mental picture of the general universe, which strongly colors all his Opinions even though he is not aware of the fact. When considered in relation to its influence upon the gen eral intellectual horizon, astronomy has claims which are second to those of no other science; and plain duty demands that in outlining courses of study these claims Shall not be ignored.
