Excerpt from Dana's Manual of Mineralogy: For the Student of Elementary Mineralogy, the Mining Engineer, the Geologist, the Prospector, the Collector, Etc It was found that it was desirable to rewrite the book, and consequently, as far as the text and figures are concerned, this present edition is almost wholly new. The scope and character of the book, however, have been kept as nearly as possible the same. The book has been primarily designed to fill the ordinary needs of the elementary student of Mineralogy, the mining engineer, the geologist and the practical man who may be interested in the subject. It has been made brief and direct and the treatment has been as untechnical as possible. The chapter on Petrography has been omitted and only a brief and general description of the various important rock types given. This change was made in view of the fact that since 1887 the subject of Petrography has had so large a development as to render impossible its adequate treatment in a single chapter. Moreover, several elementary books on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book provides a comprehensive description of the application of clay minerals as disinfectants and the ingredients of medicines. While the presently available literature highlights one or two aspects of medicinal clays, a comprehensive text on all their major pharmaceutical applications is lacking. This book endeavors to fill up this lacuna. It further elucidates the properties of clay minerals that facilitate their application in the protection of human health, and how these properties are related to the chemical compositions and internal structures of selected mineral groups, thus revealing to the students, teachers and researchers the underlying relationship of seemingly different disciplines like mineralogy, material science and medical science. The thought-provoking questions added at the end of each chapter will give the readers a better insight of this subject. The tangible definitions and explanations of all the relevant scientific terms provided in this book, both within the text and in a glossary list at the end, are expected to help the beginners to develop a clear-cut understanding regarding different aspects of the subject and clear any confusion resulting from the ambiguous usage of terms in the existing literature.

Africa’s dire need to industrialize is universally acknowledged and it is evident that the continent’s vast mineral resources can catalyze that industrialization. This requires the promotion of local beneficiation and value addition of minerals to yield materials on which modern Africa’s industry and society can rely. This book is, therefore, about transforming Africa’s comparative advantages in minerals into the continent’s competitive edge regarding materials. Mineral beneficiation and value addition form the basis and provide opportunities for mineral-driven Africa’s industrialization. The scope of the book is three-fold with inter-connected relationships: Information, Technical, and Policy oriented. It will be a useful reference material for mining undergraduate students on beneficiation and value addition of each of the minerals found in Africa. The book, while presenting a broad overview of beneficiation and value addition of Africa’s minerals, provides crucial starting material for postgraduate research students and R&D institutions who wish to delve into more advanced methods of extraction and utilization of mineral-derived materials that are in Africa for the purpose of industrialization of the continent.
