The diversity of subjects involved in marine corrosion and fouling processes are evident in the approaches and techniques described in this book. An improvized understanding of biologically influenced corrosion and fouling processes is essential to the development of better corrosion protection systems, and this book shows new perspectives in our appreciation of these subjects. Equally, powerful microscope imaging, surface spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques have become available and are providing new information on metal surfaces experiencing fouling or microbial corrosion. Examples include confocal laser microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy and scanning (or vibrating) reference electrode techniques. Advances in knowledge of biocorrosion processes have enabled improvements in corrosion monitoring and protection strategies. Examples include metal or polymer coatings and the use of corrosion inhibitors and biocides. This book aims to provide a contribution to existing literature on biocorrosion in the marine environment.

Marine corrosion is a very ancient topic, as humankind has, since antiquity, struggled with the corrosiveness of seawater to exploit the countless and essential natural resources of the sea. It is also a broad topic because it combines chemical, biological, and mechanical factors. Among the numerous materials used for marine applications, iron-based alloys (i.e., steels) are essential in various industrial domains such as (of course) the naval industry (ships, submarines, etc.), the energy industry (pipelines, offshore platforms, renewable energy devices, etc.), and buildings (seaport structures, bridges, steel reinforcement in concrete, etc.). Marine corrosion is still an issue to this day, and the recent and necessary development of marine renewable energy devices has motivated innovative research. Currently, complete mastery of corrosion issues is a key aspect in the profitability of produced energy. Simultaneously, the requirements for environmentally friendly anticorrosion methods and processes are clearly expressed. Numerous fundamental and recent advances in marine corrosion and protection of steels, including carbon steel, low alloy steel, and stainless steel, can then be noted. This Special Issue is necessary to acknowledge the recent and sudden increase in the understanding of steel corrosion processes in marine environments and the associated optimization of anticorrosion methods. Last but not least, a large part of our cultural heritage lies at the bottom of seas and oceans, and it will definitely be lost if scientific research does not include current and historical concerns as well.

This volume contains the results of the third phase (1981 - 1987) of a research programme on the in-service behaviour of welded marine structures under fatigue and corrosion fatigue loading. The programme was undertaken in six EEC countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, United Kingdom) in close association with similar work being undertaken in Norway and Canada. In all, more than 40 research laboratories have been involved in an overall collaboration aimed at generating information relevant to the performance of offshore steel structures and fostering a precise degree of common technical understanding that will encourage the increased use of structural steel fabrications for the exploitation of offshore hydrocarbon reserves throughout the world. The programme has already produced tangible benefits for both the steel and oil industries through the contribution it has made to a better understanding of the behaviour of steel structures in marine environments as well as by providing the data necessary for the revision of codes of practice relating to the fabrication of these structures.

Corrosion and Corrosion Protection of Wind Power Structures in Marine Environments: Volume 2: Corrosion Protection Measures offers the first comprehensive review on corrosion and corrosion protection of offshore wind power structures. The book extensively discusses corrosion phenomena and corrosion types in different marine corrosion zones, including the modeling of corrosion processes and interactions between corrosion and structural stability. The book addresses important design issues, namely materials selection relevant to their performance in marine environments, corrosion allowance, and constructive design. Active and passive corrosion protection measures are emphasized, with special sections on cathodic corrosion protection and the use of protective coatings. Seawater related issues associated with cathodic protection, such as calcareous deposit formation, hydrogen formation, and fouling, are discussed. With respect to protective coatings, the book considers, for the first time, complete loading scenarios, including corrosive loads, mechanical loads, and special loads, and covers a wide range of coating materials. Problems associated with fouling and bacterial-induced corrosion are extensively reviewed. The book closes with a chapter on recent developments in maintenance strategies, inspection techniques, and repair technologies. The book will be of special interest to materials scientists, materials developers, corrosion engineers, maintenance engineers, civil engineers, steel work designers, mechanical engineers, marine engineers, chemists, and coating specialists. ATMOSPHERIC CORROSION Presents a comprehensive look at atmospheric corrosion, combining expertise in corrosion science and atmospheric chemistry Atmospheric corrosion has been a subject of engineering study, largely empirical, for nearly a century. Scientists came to the field rather later on and had considerable difficulty bringing their arsenal of tools to bear on the problem. Atmospheric corrosion was traditionally studied by specialists in corrosion having little knowledge of atmospheric chemistry, history, or prospects. Atmospheric Corrosion provides a combined approach bringing together experimental corrosion and atmospheric chemistry. The second edition expands on this approach by including environmental aspects of corrosion, atmospheric corrosion modeling, and international corrosion exposure programs. The combination of specialties provides a more comprehensive coverage of the topic. These scientific insights into the corrosion process and its amelioration are the focus of this book. Key topics include the following: Basic principles of atmospheric corrosion chemistry Corrosion mechanisms in controlled and uncontrolled environments Degradation of materials in architectural, transport, and structural applications; electronic devices; and cultural artifacts Protection of existing materials and choosing new ones that resist corrosion Prediction of how and where atmospheric corrosion may evolve in the future Complete with appendices discussing experimental techniques, computer models, and the degradation of specific metals, Atmospheric Corrosion, Second Edition continues to be an invaluable resource for corrosion scientists, corrosion engineers, conservators, environmental scientists, and anyone interested in the theory and application of this evolving field. The book concerns primarily the atmospheric corrosion of metals and is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in any of the physical or engineering sciences.
