At the start of the twenty-first century, Cairo’s cityscape has acquired a spectacular global touch. Its luxurious five-star hotels, high-rise office buildings, immaculately clean malls, and swanky coffee shops serving café latte and caesar salad, along with the budding gated communities in the city’s desert expanses, exemplify three decades of economic liberalization. In the surrounding social landscape, the gradual abrogation of the Nasser-era structures that provided many with low-cost goods and services is dearly felt. This new study examines Cairo’s experience of economic liberalization in an era of globalization. It asks what happened to a postcolonial middle class that was once the carrier of national aspirations and dreams. It explores how young middle-class professionals navigate Cairo’s increasingly divided landscape and discusses the rise of a young uppermiddle class presence in the work, leisure, and public spaces of the city.

With the intensification of globalization, there is a growing consensus that «international education has come of age». This book examines how the changing conditions of the present have given rise to an altered set of meanings and uses for international education, using the International Baccalaureate (IB) as its focal point. Currently adopted in over 2,500 private and state-run schools in 134 countries around the world, the IB has far surpassed the expectations of its founders, who struggled under considerable challenges in the 1960s to develop an internationally recognized diploma for university entrance. From its beginnings to its current prominence, the history of the IB richly illuminates the shifting meanings, uses, challenges, and progressive openings of international education in a global age. Documenting the ideals, goals, and complications faced by the IB movement, this book will be relevant to individuals interested in the IB in particular, as well as to those interested in the broader areas of global studies, progressive pedagogy, educational change, and globalization.

Global Dream of Poetry Forever is a collection of words and ages of century till today. I have related their cultures, histories, and geographies to my feelings I feel are described in art. Poetry is expressions of emotions, rhymes, and metaphorical symmetries to the writer’s expo in words relative to people. I see my resembled words ministered by the honesty, diligence, and carefully boosted inventiveness latched into hearts and spoken in metaphorical descriptions and magical words that rhyme with times together in place, history, and time to bring the spark of light into the stars of sight and the bright feeling so we see the meaningful life we share as a neighbor, a friend, a lover, a wife from husband to a child to a civilization in place of history or time symmetrically sealed inside spiritually chiming bells by true love. It’s the feeling we individually feel that touch our minds and lifts our spirits to the top of the rainbows, to our pots of gold blessed by the unicorns, to the imaginarily lands of peace, love, joy, and our life's happiness eternally and forever. This is what I feel about people in my life and words I wrote in my book, Global Dreams of Poetry Forever. God bless us all on this day and forever. Today we feel what we will feel for each other in visages and venial passages tunneling inside our life force dwelling within us to be united and not ever part with our hearts of love for each other.

Buenos Aires is a city of fascinating contrasts. The most southerly of the world's great metropolises, it absolutely dominates the Argentine urban system, but is relatively isolated from the rest of Latin America and the global economic and political system. The archetypal elegance and social sophistication of "the Paris of the South" is set against problems of poor housing, social deprivation and suburban sprawl. As Argentina struggles to maintain a democracy, the future stability of the region depends on how this vital, varied and vulnerable city comes to terms with the need to restructure in the face of economic, environmental and demographic crises. The examination of restructuring processes in Buenos Aires is organised around four major themes: economic change, accessibility and mobility, environmental impacts and cultural adjustments. The book begins with an overview of the city's four hundred year history which forms the basis for an examination of the contemporary urban landscape. This leads to an analysis of local politics in relation to planning and housing policies which is followed by a consideration of changes in the city's economic structures and an examination of Buenos Aires' national, regional and global transport links. The book then turns to a detailed look at the city's urban transport networks and surveys the city's green spaces, environmental problems and health care systems. It also provides a detailed analysis of the cultural geography of Buenos Aires and the implications for the "Latin-Americanizing" of a city that was traditionally the most European of the South American cities. The book concludes with some suggestions for future planning policies in Buenos Aires. David J. Keeling provides a highly illustrated and authoritative portrait of a major World City. It is essential reading for students of urban and regional geography, Latin American specialists of all disciplines and social scientists interested in urban issues.

One Belt, One Road is China's bold plan to remake the global economy. It's an ambitious strategy with a $2 trillion – and rising – budget. The objective? To challenge the existing economic and political world order. One Road, Many Dreams reveals the true extent of China's ambition, analyses the impact of the One Belt, One Road initiative and assesses its chances of success and failure. This is the Asian century and China has a plan – to remake the world economy. Under its audacious One Belt, One Road strategy, China is investing trillions of dollars in hundreds of projects all around the globe. It's buying up ports, building transport networks and constructing major infrastructure. From hydroelectric plants to oil pipelines, China supplies the labour if needed, the raw materials and the finance, creating customers and boosting its own economy in the process. More than 80 nations have already joined China's increasingly less exclusive club and by 2049, when One Belt, One Road is set to end, its number of members is likely to rival the UN. So far, China has exercised its soft power of debt diplomacy and financial might shrewdly, serving the planet's overlooked middle-income and poor countries. The rest of the world needs to wake up because the scale of One Belt, One Road is unprecedented. Its implications for the global structure of power are potentially seismic as the geopolitical ties between Europe and Asia deepen. Written by three highly regarded political economists, One Road, Many Dreams examines the One Belt, One Road initiative from all angles. It looks at the projects and the players, the alliances and the governance. It explores the opportunities for China and the threat to the West, particularly for Trump's isolationist US administration. At home and abroad, China is staking its credibility as a superpower on One Belt, One Road. Its resources appear limitless, but One Road, Many Dreams asks a tough question: has China overreached? Or can it really pull this off and remake the world economy in its own interests?

This New York Times–bestselling exploration of the Arctic, a National Book Award winner, is “one of the finest books ever written about the far North” (Publishers Weekly). “The nation’s premier nature writer” travels to a landscape at once barren and beautiful, perilous and alluring, austere yet teeming with vibrant life, and shot through with human history (San Francisco Chronicle). The Arctic has for centuries been a destination for the most ambitious explorers—a place of dreams, fears, and awe-inspiring spectacle. This “dazzling” account by the author of Of Wolves and Men takes readers on a breathtaking journey into the heart of one of the world’s last frontiers (The New York Times). Based on Barry Lopez’s years spent traveling the Arctic regions in the company of Eskimo hunting parties and scientific expeditions alike, Arctic Dreams investigates the unique terrain of the human mind, thrown into relief against the vastness of the tundra and the frozen ocean. Eye-opening and profoundly moving, it is a magnificent appreciation of how wilderness challenges and inspires us. Renowned environmentalist and author of Desert Solitaire Edward Abbey has called Arctic Dreams “a splendid book . . . by a man who is both a first-rate writer and an uncompromising defender of the wild country and its native inhabitants”—and the New Yorker hails it as a “landmark” work of travel writing. A vivid, thoughtful, and atmospheric read, it has earned multiple prizes, including the National Book Award, the Christopher Medal, the Oregon Book Award, and a nomination for the National Book Critics Circle Award. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Barry Lopez including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.
