The findings suggest that to promote Green Jobs in the forest sector it is key to: (i) look at forest ecosystem services management as the frame for Green Forest Jobs; (ii) recognize the progress made in the development of Green Forest Jobs and to identify avenues for the future; (iii) enhance the public perception of jobs in the forest sector; (iv) revise existing curricula and develop new ones for catering to the needs of the sector to close the skills gaps; and (v) to facilitate an inclusive transition to green economy through training and support.

Green jobs represent one of the fastest growing and changing segments of the global economy. Green Jobs: Exploring Forest Careers contains four learning activities that engage youth in actively exploring forest-related green careers. Anyone can use this resource with youth ages 12-25 in settings ranging from community youth programs and school classrooms, to college and career prep, to field trips and forest tours. Designed to be flexible, use individual activities or use the entire set as a stand-alone unit. The guide also contains a quiz that helps youth match their personality with an array of green jobs opportunities, and a self-assessment of their technical and other skills, such as communication and problem solving. Appendices include a list of career information websites, job boards and connections to academic standards.

This study provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the forest sector workforce in the UNECE region. It analyzes working conditions and occupational safety and health as well as the economic and social contexts that have led to structural changes in the sector, to the extent possible, through statistical data available at the regional level.. It links the statistics to wider research, conducted in a range of disciplines and contexts, which shed light on the causes of, and experiences with the changes in the sector and possible ways to make the forest sector more future-proof.

This publication is intended to assist stakeholders in the forestry sector to successfully navigate the transition to a forest sector that is fully engaged in the green economy. New and increasing opportunities for providing forest-based services and products, growing business and revenue as well as creating jobs arise from this transition. Application of the guidelines will assist in ensuring that the forestry workforce is fit for purpose and forestry is able to attract workers in the 21st century's labour market.

Policy issues relating to forestry have been the subject of much debate in recent years, and many countries and international agencies have recently, or are currently in the process, of revising their policies for forestry. Much of this debate has implied that previous policies have failed or been much less successful than had been hoped. There is a tendency to think of policy as a matter for governments, but it is now more widely appreciated that all shareholders in the forestry sector have a legitimate interest in both the policy objectives and the means that will be used to implement it. This book is mainly concerned with the process of developing policy and the subsequent implementation, than in specific content, though many of the important issues which policies must address are discussed. It is based on a review of many case studies with which the author has been personally involved over the past 40 years.

Since 1978, when the World Bank published its policy paper on forestry, the world's understanding of and concern about the forest sector of the developing world has increased substantially. It has become clear that forests and woodlands play an even more important economic and ecological role than had earlier been recognized. In particular, the importance of tropical moist forests in protecting biological diversity has become more fully appreciated, as has their role in the carbon cycle and in global climatic change.
