Several excellent books have been published that address one or more aspects of the diverse field of industrial mycology, but none of them cover the entire process of fungal bioactive metabolites discovery. Until now. The Handbook of Industrial Mycology provides, in one volume, an overview of recent developments in industrial mycology with emphasis on the discovery of bioactive metabolites and, most importantly, their underlying biology and genetics. Two additional features distinguish this book from other books in the field: 1) most chapters are prepared using experimental data to illustrate theories and 2) the authors provide methodologies and experimental protocols in their chapters. Presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances, the book provides a framework of basic methods, tools, and organizational principles for channeling fungal germplasm into the academic, pharmaceutical, and enzyme discovery laboratories. It covers the complex range of processes involved in the discovery, characterization, and profiling of bioactive fungal metabolites. The book includes examples of several recently marketed fungal metabolites and explores the impact of fungi on applications in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, agricultural, and agrochemical industries.

Fungi: Biology and Applications is a comprehensive, balanced introduction of the biology, biotechnological applications and medical significance of fungi. With no prior knowledge of the subject assumed, the opening chapters offer a broad overview of the basics of fungal biology, in particular the physiology and genetics of fungi. Later chapters move on to include more detailed coverage of topics such as proteomics, bioinformatics, heterologous protein expression, medical mycology, anti-fungal drug development and function, fungal biotechnology and fungal pathogens of economically important plants. Carefully structured, each chapter contains self-assessment exercises with answers included at the end of the book to enhance student understanding. A comprehensive treatment of the medical and economic importance of fungi to everyday life Chapters include revision sections and problems to reinforce key concepts Invaluable for undergraduates taking a first course on fungal biology or mycology. also of interest to those working within the field looking for an up-to-date introduction.

This book analyzes the right pathway to solve the controversial identifications of some Trichoderma species on the basis of sampling procedures, slide culture techniques, macroscopic and microscopic analysis, and molecular tools. Most species of the genus Trichoderma grow rapidly in artificial culture and produce large numbers of small green or white conidia from conidiogenous cells located at the ends of conidiophores. The morphological characters are reported to be variable to a certain degree in their color, shape of conidia, conidiophore, pustules, and phialade. These characteristics allow a comparatively easy means of identification of Trichoderma as a genus but the species concept is difficult to deduce and there is considerable confusion over the application of specific names. This work provides an essential link between data and taxa as a means to verify the taxonomic characters of the strains sequenced, and macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Otherwise, a species level identification study cannot be corrected or uncorrected, and the user has to rely on the person perhaps making a mis-identification.
