Historically, a unit's success is directly related to the ability of the staff to execute the military decisionmaking process (MDMP). Given the increased complexity of today's operational environment and the vast array of mission command systems and processes, integration and synchronization of all activities associated with operations are increasingly difficult. Observations derived from deployed units, as well as from trainers at Combat Training Centers (CTCs) over the past decade, indicate a significant loss of unit ability to conduct a detailed MDMP. This lack of planning expertise results in de-synchronized operations, and could ultimately cost the lives of Soldiers. There are numerous key doctrinal manuals that address MDMP. This handbook is designed to consolidate much of this doctrine, combined with analysis of observations from recent deployments and CTC rotations, into a single source that is useful to junior leaders as they conduct the MDMP. More detailed study of the MDMP can be accomplished by studying the key doctrinal manuals listed in Chapter 13 of this handbook.

This book offers a comprehensive approach to the question of how artificial intelligence (AI) impacts politics, economy, and the society today. In this view, it is quintessential for understanding the complex nature of AI and its role in today’s world. The book has been divided into three parts. Part one is devoted to the question of how AI will be used for security and defense purposes, including combat in war zones. Part two looks at the value added of AI and machine learning for decision-making in the fields of politics and business. Part three consists of case studies—covering the EU, the USA, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, and Poland—that discuss how AI is being used in the realms of politics, security and defense. The discussion in the book opens with the question of the nature of AI, as well as of ethics and the use of AI in combat. Subsequently, the argument covers issues as diverse as the militarization of AI, the use of AI in strategic studies and military strategy design. These topics are followed by an insight into AI and strategic communication (StratCom), including disinformation, as well as into AI and finance. The case-studies included in part 3 of the book offer a captivating overview of how AI is being employed to stimulate growth and development, to promote data- and evidence-driven policy-making, to enable efficient and inclusive digital transformation and other related issues. Written by academics and practitioners in an academically sound, yet approachable manner, this volume queries issues and topics that form the thrust of processes that transform world politics, economics and society. As such, this volume will serve as the primer for students, researchers, lectures and other professionals who seek to understand and engage with the variety of issues AI implicates.

Through Tara’s story and other service members and their families stories, we can learn that everyone must balance the demands of the system with the art of caring for oneself. Hyper focused on the failed systems, Tara would soon learn that she was disregarding the fact that her own system was overwhelmed and overstimulated. She nearly became a casualty herself. She would transition from the role of the mental health provider to the patient in a way she never saw coming. As a trained psychotherapist and seasoned Army Officer, she was motivated more than ever to expose the harsh realities plaguing our military today with respect to failed policies, toxic command climates, and a grossly negligent and a failing military mental health system. She was motivated to bring about necessary and everlasting change to our Armed Forces-even if it meant losing her career. She takes a very clinical approach through self-disclosure and through the stories and disclosures of other service members and their family members to capture the scope and magnitude of the problem. She elevates solutions to the senior brass and policy makers within Tracer Patient. Her determination is second to none and her motivations are only well-intentioned. She speaks hard truths to power and refuses to quit until suicide rates decrease and until we fix an epically broken mental health system. She addresses the problem and provides impactful solutions as well as exposes those that have attempted at every turn to sweep the problem under the rug and pretend that it doesn’t exist. The book serves as the mirror to improve insights among the most senior leaders in the institution so that we can then begin our clean-up efforts as an organization. Tracer Patient aims to bring insight, then spark action and to motivate the reader, so that everyone, regardless of what system you may find yourself, to stand up to these things that are happening and to do your part to bring about systemic changes affecting us all. Enjoy Tracer Patient!

Mission Transition is an essential career-change guide for any transitioning veteran that wants to avoid false starts and make optimal career choices following active duty. Every year, about a quarter of a million veterans leave the military - most of whom are unprepared for the transition. These service members have developed incredible leadership, problem-solving, and practical skills that are underutilized once they reach the civilian world, a detriment to both themselves and society. Well-intentioned Transition Assistance Programs and other support structures within the armed forces often leave veterans fending for themselves. The mission-first culture of the military results in service members focusing on their active duty roles in the year leading up to their separation, leaving them little time to adequately prepare to join the civilian world. President of Purepost, a next-generation staffing solution and public benefits corporation, and author Matthew J. Louis guides military personnel through the entire process of making a successful move into civilian professional life. In Mission Transition, this book will: Guide you through the process of discovering what path you want to take going forward Teach you the strategies that will make your résumé stand out Provide suggestions to help you prepare for and ace the interview Discuss ways to acclimate to your new organization’s culture and pay it forward to other veterans Each chapter includes advice from other veterans, illustrations of key concepts, summaries, and suggested resources. Let this well-written and easy to follow guidebook help you transition out from the military and commit to being successful in the next chapter of your life.
