production of this volume of the Handbook. If this joint enterprise has succeeded it is thanks to their competence, knowledge and application, for the editor's role is merely that of a coordinator. My thanks are also due to Springer-Verlag, the publishers, who gave me every possible assistance in seeing this volume to completion. Dr. D. Maroske was kind enough to prepare the Subject Index. And lastly I should like to voice my indebtedness to the Management of Sandoz Ltd., Basle, which allowed me to devote a not inconsiderable part of my time to the editing of this volume. I am also very grateful to a number of members of the staff of Sandoz Ltd.: to Mr. J.E. Smith, B. Sc., F.1. L., who translated some chapters and revised the language of others and to Miss Hannelore Straube and Miss Sonja Ebner for their valuable secreterial help.

Chemistry, Biology, and Medicine of Neurohypophyseal Hormones and Their Analogs, Volume 8 covers the advances in methods to study peptide hormone action at the molecular level. The book discusses the anatomy, physiology, and clinical disorders of the neurohypophysis; the biosynthesis of neurohypophyseal peptides; and the structure-activity relationships of neurohypophyseal peptides, with an emphasis on the role of conformational features. The text also describes conformational studies of neurohypophyseal hormones by physical chemical techniques; the central nervous system effects of neurohypophyseal peptides; and the effects of neurohypophyseal hormones on the kidney. The effects of neurohypophyseal hormones on the cardiovascular systems are also considered. Chemists, neurobiologists, and people involved in the study of neurohypophyseal hormones will find the book invaluable.

Leonidas Zervas, Emeritus Professor of organic chemistry at the University of Athens, and past president of the National Academy of Greece, cele brated his seventieth birthday this past year. For almost fifty years Zervas devoted his scientific skills and perception to the advancement of chemistry, particularly in the field of peptides and proteins. Indeed, his efforts, along with those of his teacher, co-worker, and friend, Max Bergmann, laid the foundations for a new era in the chemistry of peptides and proteins. Many of his colleagues and former students felt that it would be most at this time to honor him with a commemorative volume. They appropriate have contributed to this volume chapters describing some of their work and reviewing the advancements in particular areas of polypeptide chemistry. They dedicate this volume to Leonidas Zervas as an expression of their esteem and appreciation for the role he has played for the past half-century in the field of peptides and proteins.

A panel of leading experts integrate the latest findings from basic and clinical science to create a comprehensive treatment of the processes by which the brain acts as an endocrine organ, not only to control hormonal functions, but also to maintain homeostasis and regulate behavior. The authors-recognized both as leaders in their fields and as skilled teachers-provide systematic coverage of the analytical, anatomical, functional, clinical, and pathological aspects of neuroendocrinology. Topics range from the interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems to the regulation of reproduction, development, metabolism, fluid balance, and biological rhythms. Neuroendocrinology in Physiology and Medicine offers an unprecedented marriage of clinical and basic knowledge that has been missing from classical neuroscience, endocrinology, and physiology texts. It will teach today's medical students and serve researchers as a valuable reference to this rapidly growing field.

A single volume of 31 articles, Mechanisms of Hormone Actions on Behavior is an authoritative selection of relevant chapters from the Hormones Brain and Behavior 2e MRW, the most comprehensive source of neuroendocrinological information assembled to date (AP June 2009). The study of hormones as they impact the brain and, subsequently, behavior is a central topic in neuroscience, endocrinology and psychiatry. This volume offers an overview of neuroendocrinological topics, approaching the subject from the perspective of the mechanisms which control hormone actions on behavior. Female, male and stress hormones are discussed at the cellular, behavioral and developmental level, and sexual differentiation of the development of hormone-dependent neuronal systems, neuropeptides/neuromodulators, and steroid-inducedneuroplasticity are addressed. There is simply no other current single-volume reference with such comprehensive coverage and depth. Authors selected are the internationally renowned experts for the particular topics on which they write, and the volume is richly illustrated with over 175 figures (over 50 in color). A collection of articles reviewing our fundamental knowledge of the mechanisms of neuroendocrinology, the book provides an essential, affordable reference for researchers, clinicians and graduate students in the area. - The most comprehensive single-volume source of up-to-date data on the mechanisms behind neuroendocrinology, with review articles covering x,y z - Chapters synthesize information otherwise dispersed across a number of journal articles and book chapters, thus saving researchers the time consuming process of finding and integrating this information themselves - Offering outstanding scholarship, each chapter is written by an expert in the topic area and approximately 35% of chapters are written by international contributors - Provides more fully vetted expert knowledge than any existing work with broad appeal for the US, UK and Europe, accurately crediting the contributions to research in those regions - Heavily illustrated with 175 figures, approximately 54 in color - Presents material in most visually useful form for the reader
