Justice Takes a Recess examines why and under what circumstances presidents use the recess appointment power to appoint judges to the Federal courts. The authors show that the use of the recess power upsets the carefully calculated separation of powers envisioned by the Framers, shifting power away from one branch of government towards another.

Writing a book about recess could be a very questionable endeavor for a serious academic psychologist. At first blush it seems to be a pretty trivial topic. Based on dozens of interviews and the observation of over a thousand children in a racially integrated, working-class public school, Recess Battles is a moving reflection of urban childhood at the turn of the millennium. The author videotaped and recorded children of the Mill School in Philadelphia from 1991 to 2004 and asked them to offer comments as they watched themselves at play.
