Last year, the Dubai International Conference in Higher Education considered the global challenge of sustaining success in higher education. This year, we posed the question: ‘How do universities combine rigour with relevance?’ Once again we have invited all those involved in the higher education community to come together to share insights related to the provision of education that is rigorous and at the same time relevant. The three key premises of the conference are these: 1. Higher education institutions must demonstrate their relevance to the needs of the workforce in a landscape of constant and rapid economic and social change. 2. They must maintain the rigorous academic standards that are the hallmark of a quality institution. 3. With the accelerating power and reach of the web, universities must meet unprecedented challenges as technological innovation disrupts their traditional business model. Unless individual universities prove that they are capable of adapting successfully in the face of these three pressures, their futures may be uncertain.

This book presents recent research on interactive collaborative learning. We are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of education and especially post-secondary education. To face these challenges, higher education has to find innovative ways to quickly respond to these new needs. On the one hand, there is a pressure by the new situation in regard to the COVID pandemic. On the other hand, the methods and organizational forms of teaching and learning at higher educational institutions have changed rapidly in recent months. Scientifically based statements as well as excellent experiences (best practice) are absolutely necessary. These were the aims connected with the 24th International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2021), which was held online by Technische Universität Dresden, Germany, on 22–24 September 2021. Since its beginning in 1998, this conference is devoted to new approaches in learning with a focus on collaborative learning in Higher Education. Nowadays, the ICL conferences are a forum of the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in Learning and Engineering Pedagogy. In this way, we try to bridge the gap between ‘pure’ scientific research and the everyday work of educators. This book contains papers in the fields of Teaching Best Practices Research in Engineering Pedagogy Engineering Pedagogy Education Entrepreneurship in Engineering Education Project-Based Learning Virtual and Augmented Learning Immersive Learning in Healthcare and Medical Education. In the last decade, due to factors of ICT infrastructural and broadband maturation, rising levels of educational attainment and computer literacy, and diversification strategies, e-learning has exploded in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. However, significant barriers remain in the region’s e-learning development: lack of research on outcomes and effectiveness, paucity of Arabic language learning objects, monopolies and high cost of telecommunications, cultural taboos, accreditation, censorship, and teacher training. This unique volume is the first comprehensive effort to describe the history, development, and current state of e-learning in each of the 20 MENA countries from Algeria to Yemen. Each entry is expertly written by a specialist who is acutely familiar with the state of e-learning in their respective country, and concludes with a bibliography of key reports, peer-reviewed books and articles, and web resources. E-Learning in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) proves itself as a vital compendium for a wide readership that includes academics and students, transnational program directors, international education experts, MENA government departments, commercial vendors and investors, and ICT development and regulatory agencies involved in e-learning in the Middle East.

This book focuses on developing an understanding of the complex interplay of forces acting on individual universities and higher education systems to enable leaders and practitioners to take purposeful and strategic action. It explores the challenging landscape of higher education and the pressures that are reshaping the university as a societal institution, describing the complex interplay of technological, sociological, political and economic forces driving change. The issues analysed are global in scope, reflecting the diversity of contexts, but also the common nature of the challenges facing institutions individually and collectively. The analysis draws on the lessons learnt and evidence from over fifty organisational case studies undertaken by the author over the past decade, exploring organisational change in higher education institutions in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, and on his engagement as president of the ACODE organisation with colleagues responsible for learning technological change in Australasia. The book helps institutions respond to technological change purposefully, in ways that build upon a clear understanding of the complex nature of the existing institution, its students and the organisational context.
