Excerpt from The Literary Miscellany, or Selections and Extracts, Classical and Scientific; With Originals, in Prose and Verse: Miscellanies Admired as Mr. Shenstone is as a poet, his char; acter, as a man of clear judgment, and deep pene tration, will best appear from his prose works. It is there we must search for the acuteness of his under standing, and his profound knowledge of the human heart. It is to be lamented, indeed, that some things here are unfinished, and can be regarded only as fragments: many are left as single thoughts, but which, like the sparks of diamonds, shew the rich ness of the mine to which they belong; or, like the foot of a Hercules, discover the uncommon strength, and extraordinary dimensions of the hero. I have no apprehension of incurring blame from any one, for preserving these valuable remains: they will dis cover to every reader, the author's sentiments on sev eral important subjects. And there can be very few, to whom they will not impart many thoughts, which they would never perhaps have been able to draw from the source of their own reflections. Excerpt from English Literary Miscellany The papers herein presented are discussions within the definite province of English Letters. They are developed along historical and critical lines, and they seek to relate the study of our vernacular literature with the manifest progress of English thought and life. As will be seen, some of the topics treated are of a general, com prehensive nature and range, but are sufficiently illustrated by concrete example to make them in telligible and practically helpful to the literary student, while others are more specific. The ar ticles have all appeared in the Bibliotheca Sacra. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First published in 2002. The history of science is one of knowledge being passed from community to community over thousands of years, and this is the classic account of the most influential of these movements -how Hellenistic science passed to the Arabs where it took on a new life and led to the development of Arab astronomy and medicine which flourished in the courts of the Muslim world, later passing on to medieval Europe. Starting with the rise of Hellenism in Asia in the wake of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, O'Leary deals with the Greek legacy of science, philosophy, mathematics and medicine and follows it as it travels across the Near East propelled by religion, trade and conquest. Dealing in depth with Christianity as a Hellenizing force, the influence of the Nestorians and the Monophysites; Indian influences by land and sea and the rise of Buddhism, O'Leary then focuses on the development of science during the Baghdad Khalifate, the translation of Greek scientific material into Arabic, and the effect for all those interested in the history of medicine and science, and of historical geography as well as the history of the Arab world.

"Learning Statistics with R" covers the contents of an introductory statistics class, as typically taught to undergraduate psychology students, focusing on the use of the R statistical software and adopting a light, conversational style throughout. The book discusses how to get started in R, and gives an introduction to data manipulation and writing scripts. From a statistical perspective, the book discusses descriptive statistics and graphing first, followed by chapters on probability theory, sampling and estimation, and null hypothesis testing. After introducing the theory, the book covers the analysis of contingency tables, t-tests, ANOVAs and regression. Bayesian statistics are covered at the end of the book.
