Excerpt from The North American Review, 1859, Vol. 88 How small, of all that human hearts endure, That part which laws or kings can cause or cure! Slender though the respect may be with which we regard our rotatory assemblymen and our partisan judges, still are they noteworthy personages. The parts are more important than the actors, and centuries hence it will be to our statutes and reports that the curious historian will resort to find out what manner Of men were the restless and energetic Yankees who could found a gigantic empire, but could hardly govern them selves. Lawgiver and law-dispenser, - save the minister of God, what human being can have interests so vital confided to him, or can exercise SO momentous an influence over his fellow-men? Cyrus and Alexander, Tamerlane and Genghis Khan, their names alone remain, and the world is as though they had never been; but the laws of Confucius and Menou. Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 90 The question is often started, whether advance in civilization and knowledge is favorable to poetry. It would be about as fair a question, whether the spring, summer, or autumn is the most favorable season for flowers. The only answer would be to ask, in turn, For what kind of flowers? If for anemones and violets, the spring; if for asters, the autumn. In like manner each stage of development has its poetry. In an age of external facts, when life has to do constantly with the outward, poetry will be objective. The epic and the drama both have their epoch here. But when life has become more internal, - when the outward affords little excitement, and the great struggles are carried on within the soul, - then poetry becomes subjective. As society advances, narrative poetry, or even prose fiction, has less place. It is in the imperfections of a wall, the crevices that time has made or unskilfulness has left, that the ivy and the wall-flower take their root. So an examination of the narrative literature of our own day would show that it has its root in the faults, not in the perfections, of our civilization. Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 65 At the time of which our author here writes, the seat of government had just been transferred to New Orleans, which then contained about a hundred huts, and somewhat more than two hundred inhabitants. And this city is now one of the great provision-markets of the world! In 1723, its population were prevented from starving by supplies received from France; in 1847, a considerable portion of famishing Europe is fed from its abundance. Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 238: January, 1873 But the question at once arises as to how far this change of form was the result of a change of political doctrines. Had the French people abandoned their republican principles as unsound or as impracticable, or had they rather been deceived into the belief that, while they were having an empire in form, they were in reality enjoying the benefits of a republic?
