Excerpt from The Rural Muse This little work here presented to the public may properly be considered as a supplement to one published eight years since, under the title of Rural Minstrelsy, as the main features of the two bear to each other a strong resemblance. It will doubtless be thought by many that this little volume is too egotistic; that the writer parades himself and his troubles too prominently before his readers, and that the sombre passage? which so frequently occur, imply a want of resignation to the divine will of the great Disposer of human events. The writer admits that many of the pieces contained in the present work were written in seasons of great despondency, and are, perhaps, too faithful transcripts of his feelings at such times to be interesting to some into whose hands his book may chance to fall; and yet not a few of those same pieces may strike a responsive chord in the bosoms of some who, like himself, have been tried in the furnace of affliction. But whatever of tender feeling or sympathy these may experience, as the private troubles of an individual seldom concern the public, so by the public they will seldom be regarded with interest; and perhaps it would have been better had those portions of the work which seem to be the offspring of a complaining and desponding spirit been of less frequent occurrence, or suppressed altogether. With much diffidence, and many misgivings, the author sends out into the world his unpretending little book, hoping that a generous public will throw the broad mantle of their charity over its numerous imperfections. Excerpt from The Rural Muse: Poems Of doing any thing If I write a short Preface, it is from no vanity of being thought concise, but on the contrary, from a feeling of inability to say any thing more to the purpose, and with much confidence I. Excerpt from The Miller's Muse: Rural Poems Should any objection be made to the title of the book, (several of the poems having been written during my state of servitude) I can assure the reader, if I may be thus allowed to express myself, that I have been a miller at heart all my life, -that my forefathers were millers for ages past, - and I was brought up at the post mill at Barrow, till the age of fourteen, where I acquired a knowledge of the business, which, perhaps, in more mature years, I might never have so effectually obtained; but having nofather to protect me, and my grandmother, of course, leaning somewhat more to the inclinations of her own children than to those of her grand child, I was obliged to leave the place, and went to live with the Rev. Edward Henry Hesl'eden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Rustic Muse: A Collection of Poems The following, the efforts of a rude, untutored muse - the hasty productions of his leisure hours - are published at the solicitations of a few of his friends - Nothing superior can beexpected from one who, instead of studying the pages of a Homer or a Virgil, was confined to a laborious and menial employ fourteen or fifteen hours each day, during the time they were written. I submit them, however, with all their defects, to the public, craving their in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
