In spite of the practical importance of the friction, wear and lubrication of elastomers, limited literature is available on this topic. Addressing these needs, this book will give readers a complete understanding of rubber tribology and the key developments in this field over the last ten years. For the first time new and important achievements such as theories of rubber abrasion and surfacial mechanochemical effects of rubber wear are presented. The book pays special attention to the principles of rubber wear – a clear understanding of which is essential for those striving towards further increasing the working life of rubber. * Comprehensively and systematically covers main points of rubber tribology * The original choice of contents informs readers of the latest developments in the field *Meeting the needs of various readers - researchers, engineers, technicians, graduates

Part of a series of data-rich handbooks within the Plastics Design Library, Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers provides a comprehensive collection of graphical multipoint data and tabular data covering the fatigue and tribological performance of plastics. The handbook is structured by grouping together plastics of similar polymer types into ten chapters. Each of these chapters is split into two sections: Fatigue Properties and Tribological Properties, and together they provide a compendium of several hundred graphs and charts, supplying the core data needed by engineers and scientists on a day-to-day basis. The data for this third edition has been updated to cover upwards of five years since the previous edition was published, and also includes an entirely new chapter covering sustainable and biodegradable polymers. The book also includes an extensive introductory section covering fatigue, what it is and how it is measured; the fundamentals of tribology; polymer chemistry and plastics composition. These chapters also provide readers with a full understanding of the data section, and how to put it to use as a hard-working information tool.

This book highlights the tribological behavior of elastomers by investigating the effect of operating variables such as, the applied load and the abrasive particle size, and the materials’ mechanical properties such as, tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness, and tear strength by the experimental, statistical and analytical methods. It is found that the wear mechanism is mostly friction wear, which is mixed with fatigue wear and abrading under higher applied loads or larger abrasives. The statistical method shows that the abrasive particle size has the highest contribution followed by the applied load on the wear process. Wear equation is developed to predict the wear rate considering the trends of the input variables.

This book summarizes the results of years of research on the problem of strength and fracture of polymers and elastomers. It sets out the modern approach to the strength theory from the standpoint of fractals, the kinetic and thermodynamic theories as well as the meso-mechanic destruction. The dimension reduction method is applied to model the friction processes in elastomers subjected to the complex dynamic loading. Finally, it analyses a relation between the fracture mechanism and the relation phenomena, and provides new experimental data on the sealing nodes in accordance with their specific working conditions where the effect of self-sealing is observed.

For all practical purposes, the useful life of a plastic component is equal to its fatigue life under conditions of cyclic loading such as those that occur in vibration. Equally important to materials engineers and designers are abrasion, friction and wearùtribological properties. Over 80 generic families are covered including thermoplastics, thermosets, thermoplastic elastomers and rubbers. Neat resins, blends and alloys, plastics with various combinations of fillers, additives and more are covered. Also covers plastics mated to plastics and metals.

Viscoelastic Machine Elements, which encompass elastomeric elements (rubber-like components), fluidic elements (lubricating squeeze films) and their combinations, are used for absorbing vibration, reducing friction and improving energy use. Examples include pneumatic tyres, oil and lip seals, compliant bearings and races, and thin films. This book sets out to show that these elements can be incorporated in machine analysis, just as in the case of conventional elements (e.g. gears, cogs, chain drives, bearings). This is achieved by introducing elementary theory and models, by describing new and established experimental techniques for determining viscoelastic properties, and finally by working through actual examples. 'This very reasonably priced book is full of valuable information not readily available from other sources on a subject which is the eminent author's speciality.' - Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, April 1995

This handbook is a database reference covering fatigue behavior and friction and wear characteristics of 106 plastics and elastomers. Data presented details the differences in behavior between generic families of plastic and rubber materials. Also covered are differences within the same generic family due to factors such as temperature, test frequency, and mating surface details (in the case of tribological properties) or material characteristics, such as sample preparation and material composition. Also covered are the tribological (friction and wear) properties of plastics and elastomers. Tribological information is presented as combinations of text, graphs, and tables. Textual data are presented as concise discussions of topics relating to the friction and wear behavior of the material of interest. Graphs show how variables affect the friction and wear properties. Tables cover coefficient of friction data, wear factor (K), wear rate, PV Limits, and abrasion resistance data.
