Mankind has scattered throughout the stars, forming thousands of civilizations at various stages of development. Fleet Command is attempting to reunite humanity through the ARCNet, an interstellar network that provides near-instantaneous communication over any distance. But as the Intrepid and her crew fly farther from Alliance-controlled space, a new threat appears. The Phalanx of Doom, an ancient foe long-relegated to the realm of comic book villainy, has been reborn. It possesses a new weapon that can alter minds, and Alliance citizens are turning on one another in violent acts of terror as Fleet Command scrambles to find the cause. We Were Promised Starships is a darkly-comedic sci-fi adventure that spans star systems and cyberspace. Join the crew of the Intrepid as they are swept into an interstellar conflict in Jason D. Reed’s debut novel

The adventure of Starship Colonial continues in this second book of ‘The Storyteller’ series. The Colonials explore new worlds searching for a new Earth, influencing and benefiting from every civilization that they encounter. Some remain behind to inhabit them, making for a wider, modern-style colonization. The most visible trace of the book is the interaction with very powerful beings, those who decide the fate of the Universe. A stronger plot of the story relates to people’s behavior, being aliens or not, the specific way in which they react in various circumstances, always learning from their experience. The Captain, Cathleen, takes her share of the action; she fails and succeeds throughout her adventures the way normal people do, and she learns to tame her emotions and instincts, to become more pragmatic, to cope with tougher, more demanding situations. She applies everything to her life, both on Starship Colonial and on Earth, and her achievements exceed her wildest expectations. However, her achievements are irrelevant if she does not fulfill the mission assigned to her by the people of Earth. Is her determination strong enough to fulfill it now, when she has everything she ever wanted? Jack remains an interesting, puzzling character throughout the book, influencing unknowingly the life of many, accomplishing everything with the innocence of a child. More characters emerge and develop from among the crew and colonists, and from the people of the worlds they encounter. Throughout the book, and throughout this whole series, there is a hidden, consistent trace of liberation from ignorant stereotypes, cold prejudices, predetermined norms, and irrelevant ideals. As opposed to real life where the great majority of people live the way it is taught, some of the characters succeed in opening their eyes, grasping this way and understanding a wider truth. And yet at times bondage defeats freedom and they have to accept it helplessly, which makes for the credible, real, complex plot of the book. Enjoy!

The date is 1967 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, is in the midst of an all-out war with the Teroni Federation. After his latest exploit saved millions of lives but embarrassed his superiors, Captain Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding orders but getting results, found himself the victim of the media feeding frenzy, a political scapegoat despite years of dedicated military service. Faced with a court martial, he was rescued by the loyal crew of his ship, the Theodore Roosevelt. Now branded mutineers, the crew of the Teddy R. has quit the Republic, never to return. Seeking to find a new life for themselves, Wilson Cole and comrades remake the Teddy R. as a pirate ship and set sail for the lawless Inner Frontier. Here, powerful warlords, cut-throat pirates, and struggling colonies compete for survival in a game where you rarely get a second chance to learn the rules. But military discipline is poor preparation for a life of pillaging and plundering, and Cole's principles naturally limit his targets. Seeking an education on the nature of piracy, Cole hunts more knowledgeable players. Enter the beautiful but deadly Valkyrie, Val for short, and the enigmatic alien fence known as David Copperfield. But hanging over everything is the fearsome alien pirate — the Hammerhead Shark. With Starship: Pirate, five-time Hugo winner Mike Resnick continues the story begun in his very first military SF. Will the galaxy ever be the same? This second book in the Starship series includes diagrams of the Teddy R., plus rules for two Starship board games.
