This book deals with a vital topic: metabolism in the cells of the body and various disorders due to its imbalance and/or diseases that disrupt the metabolism of the body. The objective of this book was to collect and compile up-to-date information from reputed researchers in their respective fields to disseminate the latest information about topics that have profound effects on the metabolic processes in the body including insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, metabolic syndrome, glycogen storage disease, and the urea cycle disorder. In total, there are 12 chapters in this book in which the authors have shared their research findings and real-life experiences in managing their patients.

We present to our readers the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Phosphate. A short account of the history of the effort led to the Phosphate Workshops is appro priate and can be of interest to the reader. The idea for Phosphate Workshops was born in the early days of November, 1974. One of us (S. G. M. ) suggested the thought to a group of scientists gathered for a luncheon in one of the attrac tive small restaurants in Weisbaden, Germany. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together interested scientists to discuss the newer developments and the recent advances in the field of phosphate metabolism and the other related minerals. An Organizing Committee made of Shaul G. Massry (USA), Louis V. Avioli (USA), Philippe Bordier (France), Herbert Fleisch (Switzerland), and Eduardo Slatopolsky (USA) was formed. The First Workshop was held in Paris during June 5-6, 1975 and was hosted by Dr. Philippe Bordier. Its proceeding was already published. The Second Workshop took place in Heidelberg during June 28-30, 1976 and was hosted by Dr. Eberhard Ritz. Both of these workshops were extremely successful scientific endeavors, and the need for them was demonstrated by the great interest they generated among the scientific community. The Or ganizing Committee, therefore, decided to continue with the tradi tion to hold additional Workshops annually or every other year.

Cellular metabolism refers to the set of chemical reactions that take place within the cells of living organisms for maintaining life. Complex sequences of well controlled biochemical reactions are a part of cellular metabolism. These processes enable organisms to develop and reproduce, preserve their structural integrity and adapt to changes in their environment. Cell metabolism reflects the state of the cell's health. The mitochondrion is the primary source of energy for the cell, where bioenergetic processes take place by absorbing fuel sources like fatty acids and glucose. Afterwards, it gets converted into energy through a series of enzymatic reactions. Cellular bioenergetics deregulation results in various pathologies, like neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and diabetes. Cancer is characterized by altered cellular metabolism which aids in the development, growth and maintenance of tumors, as well as malignant transformation. The use of cultured cells in the clinical diagnosis of hereditary metabolic dis ease is a rapidly developing subject to which many different disciplines have brought their expertise and knowledge. A number of scientists who have in dividually contributed to the growth of the subject gave invited papers at the Fourteenth Symposium of the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism in the University of Edinburgh on 13-16th July, 1976. These papers form the basis of this monograph which brings together contributions from the basic sciences and from physicians concerned primarily with human disease. The cross-fertilization produced by this interdisciplinary communica tion was invaluable to those trying to understand and overcome diagnostic problems posed by hereditary metabolic disease.
