Understand the Significance of Symbols in Your Design Work Our world is comprised of a handful of very simple patterns that have been a part of human design since the beginning of time and have eternal significance. Decoding Design reveals how common symbols and shapes - like circles, squares and triangles - resonate at a gut level and can lend greater meaning to a design. By deconstructing famous logos and other sample designs, you'll learn how to communicate complex information quickly and intuitively with universal and meaningful patterns. You'll also uncover how other disciplines, such as philosophy, math, and physics, influence great design and can help you present ideas in a holistic and compelling manner. Whether you're a designer, student, or marketing professional, Decoding Design will show you the deeper meaning behind the symbols you encounter everyday, and how to better use those symbols to create an impactful relationship with the viewer.

Volume I, entitled “Augmentation of Brain Functions: Brain-Machine Interfaces”, is a collection of articles on neuroprosthetic technologies that utilize brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). BMIs strive to augment the brain by linking neural activity, recorded invasively or noninvasively, to external devices, such as arm prostheses, exoskeletons that enable bipedal walking, means of communication and technologies that augment attention. In addition to many practical applications, BMIs provide useful research tools for basic science. Several articles cover challenges and controversies in this rapidly developing field, such as ways to improve information transfer rate. BMIs can be applied to the awake state of the brain and to the sleep state, as well. BMIs can augment action planning and decision making. Importantly, BMI operations evoke brain plasticity, which can have long-lasting effects. Advanced neural decoding algorithms that utilize optimal feedback controllers are key to the BMI performance. BMI approach can be combined with the other augmentation methods; such systems are called hybrid BMIs. Overall, it appears that BMI will lead to many powerful and practical brain-augmenting technologies in the future.

Fuses design fundamentals and software training into one cohesive book! Teaches art and design principles with references to contemporary digital art alongside basic digital tools in Adobe's Creative Cloud Addresses the growing trend of compressing design fundamentals and design software into the same course in universities and design trade schools. Lessons are timed to be used in 50 to 90 minute class sessions with additional materials available online Free video screencasts demonstrate key concepts in every chapter All students of digital design and production—whether learning in a classroom or on their own—need to understand the basic principles of design. These principles are often excluded from books that teach software. Foundations of Digital Art and Design reinvigorates software training by integrating design exercises into tutorials fusing design fundamentals and core Adobe Creative Cloud skills. The result is a comprehensive design learning experience. This book is organized into six sections that focus on vector art, photography, image manipulation, typography, web design, and effective habits. Design topics and principles include: Bits, Dots, Lines, Shapes, Rule of Thirds, Zone System, Color Models, Collage, Appropriation, Gestalt, The Bauhaus Basic Course Approach, The Grid, Remix, Automation, and Revision.

WelcometotheproceedingsofPATMOS2004,thefourteenthinaseriesofint- national workshops. PATMOS 2004 was organized by the University of Patras with technical co-sponsorship from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. Over the years, the PATMOS meeting has evolved into an important - ropean event, where industry and academia meet to discuss power and timing aspects in modern integrated circuit and system design. PATMOS provides a forum for researchers to discuss and investigate the emerging challenges in - sign methodologies and tools required to develop the upcoming generations of integrated circuits and systems. We realized this vision this year by providing a technical program that contained state-of-the-art technical contributions, a keynote speech, three invited talks and two embedded tutorials. The technical program focused on timing, performance and power consumption, as well as architectural aspects, with particular emphasis on modelling, design, charac- rization, analysis and optimization in the nanometer era. This year a record 152 contributions were received to be considered for p- sible presentation at PATMOS. Despite the choice for an intense three-day m- ting, only 51 lecture papers and 34 poster papers could be accommodated in the single-track technical program. The Technical Program Committee, with the - sistance of additional expert reviewers, selected the 85 papers to be presented at PATMOS and organized them into 13 technical sessions. As was the case with the PATMOS workshops, the review process was anonymous, full papers were required, and several reviews were received per manuscript.

Design reuse is not just a topic of research but a real industrial necessity in the microelectronic domain and thus driving the competitiveness of relevant areas like for example telecommunication or automotive. Most companies have already dedicated a department or a central unit that transfer design reuse into reality. All main EDA conferences include a track to the topic, and even specific conferences have been established in this area, both in the USA and in Europe. Virtual Components Design and Reuse presents a selection of articles giving a mature and consolidated perspective to design reuse from different points of view. The authors stem from all relevant areas: research and academia, IP providers, EDA vendors and industry. Some classical topics in design reuse, like specification and generation of components, IP retrieval and cataloguing or interface customisation, are revisited and discussed in depth. Moreover, new hot topics are presented, among them IP quality, platform-based reuse, software IP, IP security, business models for design reuse, and major initiatives like the MEDEA EDA Roadmap.
