But it is not by the untutored that their happy effects will be fully experienced. Our natural relish or taste (which word we employ in the present essay to denote merely oar capacity to receive the pleasures of such compositions, and of the fine arts in general) is susceptible of far greater improvement than may at first be supposed: and we shall endeavour to point out the circumstances on which that improvement depends. An outgrowth of the recent meeting of the International Society of the History of Rhetoric, this collection challenges the reader to reexamine the broad influence of 18th- and 19th-century Scottish rhetoric, often credited for shaping present-day studies in psychology, philosophy, literary criticism, oral communication, English literature, and composition.
